Anyone have any pointers for cutting bangs?

I am cutting Sydney some bangs today. If you'll remember, I cut her hair twice before. Once with success and once, well... not successfully. The first time, since she had so much hair on the top of her head, I pulled it up (a little forward) in a pony and just chopped it. It looked natural (shockingly) when I took it down. Almost like it was layered. The second time I did the same thing, but then got carried away trying to make it look a little MORE natural. It ended up looking like I did it with my eyes closed.

Anyway, should I cut them like a hairdresser? Sort of straight across using my fingers? Or should I try the pony trick with just the front of her hair/bang area?

  • My grandmother cut my bangs once...only once. Stick out tongue

I cut my own bangs, but have never cut anyone else's.

  • My advice is to put the scissors down and call a professional. ;-)

  • I have never had a LO with enough hair to cut before they were 3.  I do know from experience that straight hair is very unforgiving.  I tried to cut my middle DDs bangs one time.  Now, I will trim my own but I have natural curls.  GL!

  • OK, I'm laughing because I read the post with my name in it first and Ellie's siggy pic is from her haircut - at the salon!!  I was too much of a wuss to even try cutting it myself.  To your question though - I've been told to do the trick you were talking about to get the most natural look.  GL, you're a braver woman than I!
  • Okay, I think you guys might have talked me out of it. For now. You all cracked me up too!
