School-Aged Children

Bullying

Yesterday the kid DS was sitting with on the school bus took his hat & gloves and threw them.  I guess behind the bus drivers seat (K's sit in the front of the bus.)  This is at least the second time DS has had issues with this kids, the first time he hit him in the face with a seat belt.

We told DS to say STOP really loud if someone is picking on him.  Also I have asked that the bus driver tries to not let DS sit with this kid (I realize this may not always be possible).  Any other suggestions?

Re: Bullying

  • File a complaint w/ the school principal.  If it happens on the bus it's under the school's jurisdiction to investigate and discipline.  If your school is like most there should be a zero-tolerance bullying policy in place.

  • Totally agree with pp.  Contact the principal and let them know what this other child is doing to your child on the bus.
  • Thank you all, for your suggestions I sent an email to the principal and copied DS's teacher.

Auntie you are correct that it is not job of the bus driver to monitor behavior, I never said it was....

  • I'm playing devils advocate here. Did your child do anything to provoke the other kid to do something??

    Call the principal.

It's not the job of the bus driver to monitor behavior on the bus, only to drive it safely.

The bus driver's job is to ensure children are transported to and from school safely. That includes keeping them safe from bullying situations. I realize that a bus driver might not be aware of every bullying situation, and driving the bus safely comes first, but if a driver is aware of thibehavior they feel is unwarranted it is their responsibility to report the behavior to the appropriate people.
