Hi.
I am delivering at REX in Raleigh in March. I am not from around here, so I was wondering what the labor experience/staff is like there. Are they receptive of birth plans/requests? Any suggestions? I have always heard great things, but just wanted to hear some of your personal thoughts/experiences
Thanks in advance.
Re: REX healthcare
Do tell more about this birthing ball, sounds very interesting... I've read a lot that the most common delivery (on your back) is not necessarily the best. Did they allow you to get up and move around a lot?
Everyone who has posted about REX seems to have had a c-section. I have always heard good things about the care, but that so many docs are eager to c-sections nowadays, using common excuses that kind of force you into it. Is that a common theme there or just coincidence? I am a patient at Wilkerson OBGYN, and just wondering if it is the docs or the hospital staff that are c-section happy.
Oh yeah, do they send you home with anything (baby/mommy care)?
Can you tell this is my first time!?! I'm a nervous wreck that I won't be prepared! lol
The c/section is based on a patient/doctor decision, not the hospital. I have a narrow pelvis and the cord was around DD neck. I did labor and push for 3 hours will no success. They gave me the choice to continue to labor (and most likely not progress) or a c/s now rather then a potential emergency one later, and I chose a c/s.
The birthing ball is just one of those big inflatable balls like they have at the gym and you can bounce on it. I could not get an epidural for the LONGEST time and that helped. The nurse also fed me ice pops/chips.
They are really nice there, they have a lactation consultant that comes every day, you also get a little cart the baby is wheeled in on and it is always stocked with baby stuff and you can take all that home, diapers, wipes, bulb syringe. I also got gel pads for my boobs (you have to ask) and a diaper bag filled with goodies. You also get the hats, onesie, blanket, etc that you use there for the baby.
I highly suggest signing up for their birth class and lactation class. You get the full tour and they tell you what to expect for check in, delivery, etc.
I also go to Wilkerson and delivered at Rex. Add me to the c-section list. DD's heart rate started to drop with every contraction, so I was given 2 choices: 1. try pit. and see if we could get me dilated faster and her out, or 2. immediate c/s to avoid a possible emergency later. (Pit. makes contractions stronger and she was already not doing well with normal ones.)
I opted for a c/s right away to avoid a possibly emergency. I had a wonderful experience and plan on having a repeat c/s with baby 2. Wilkerson was supportive of a VBAC if I wanted one since I am a good candidate, but I don't want to labor and end up with surgery anyway.
Like PP said, staff was great and food was pretty darn good for hospital food. You can also eat whenever you want and order whatever you want.
