Birth Center: Methodist SLP vs. Southdale

Hello Ladies!

I recently found out I am expecting and am trying to determine which OB and which hospital to deliver at (I live in Hopkins/Minnetonka). Do you have any experiences (good and bad!) about either Methodist in SLP or Southdale that you could share with me?

Thank you!

Re: Birth Center: Methodist SLP vs. Southdale

  • I used OGI (Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Infertility).  They have offices in both Edina and Maple Grove, and I LOVE Dr. Lisa Baker.  I have seen many doctors in the practice and have liked all of them - though I did see Dr. Baker for all but 1 appointment during my pg.

I went on hospital bed rest at Fairview Southdale at 29 weeks, and remained there until I delivered at 34 weeks.  I saw every nurse on staff and seriously loved the all, and miss them to this day.  I also got to know the special care (NICU) staff well and they too were exceptional!  Hopefully you will not need it but they are upgrading their nursery to be able to handle 30 weekers.  Hands down, I would choose FV Southdale again.

  • I didn't deliver at Methodist (that was the original plan), but I did end up on brief bedrest there. Good staff. Nice rooms.

  • I delivered my first at Abbott and my second at Methodist.  I MUCH preferred Abbott.  It wasnt an awful experince at Methodist, and to their credit it was an extremely busy weekend, but it wasnt the best.  I only saw the doc for literally 5 mins when I arrived, then 13 hours later when I was ready to push.  My nurses were nice, but never left me alone which was VERY frustrating.
  • I delivered at Methodist and had a good experience.  Nurses were great for the most part.  Our room was small, but it wasn't a big deal since we didn't have many visitors.
  • I delivered at Methodist & had a really positive experience. I was induced at 42 weeks & DS took another 2 days to arrive. The nurses were great, the one that was with us during L&D (Annie) was awesome! Very attentive & caring. We had a doula & I really wanted to be left alone w/her & DH, the staff was very considerate of my wishes. Annie really became an advocate for me in the end, fighting for me to go ahead w/a vaginal delivery. The dr. was unsure & was suggesting a c-section. I would deliver at Methodist again.

Cons: I only saw the Dr. a few times, a couple min each time, & again at delivery. Not a big deal to me, like I said I wanted to be left alone , but some people want more.

  • I haven't given birth yet, but I will be delivering at FV Southdale. We have toured the labor and delivery birth center and have also taken all our childbirth prep/breastfeeding classes there as well. Everyone so far has been great.

As far as OBGYN, I go to Southdale OBGYN and I love it. I have seen a lot of the doctors and they have been great.

  • Congratulations!

I delivered LO#2 at Methodist. It was fine. My whole stay was really quite the comedy of errors--nothing dangerous, just comical really, the 'perfect' ending to a very complicated pregnancy. Anyway, the nurses are knowledgable, the delivery suites are generous in size, all rooms (delivery and post-partum) have tubs in them, and they let you determine how involved the medical staff is. I thought the post-partum room I was in was a little cramped, but we also had lots of people who wanted to visit all at the same time.

  • I delivered at FV Southdale, and had a great experience.  The only "weird' part was that there were so many births that night (they were even taking overflow from Methodist that night), that we didn't get to move to the 4th floor (nicer) recovery rooms until the 2nd day.  No big deal though.  The nurses were all very nice.

My OB is Dr. Hirt at Paul Larson OBGYN (in southdale med. blg.) - he's awesome.

  • I also have not delivered yet but I spent some time at FV Southdale on bed rest. I thought the nurses were nice but I didn't care for the L&D room nor all the noise from the construction. My OB group was Southdale OB and I was happy with them.

However, at the end of November I was sent to North Memorial (Riverside was full) to finish out my bed rest because Southdale does not yet have a level 3 NICU. I'm fairly new to MN and not heard of North Memorial hospital. However, I can say being here for a few weeks the nurses and drs here are amazing. The good thing is that I am still able to see my original MFMs because they rotate here as well. Although Fariview Southdale was my original birthing choice I may just want to deliver here because I really love how I have been treated here. If I do that, I would need to switch OB groups because Southdale OB does not rotate here and its the Oakdale OB practice here. I've gotten to meet all the Oakdale OBs and I've been pleasantly happy with them as well!

  • I delivered at Southdale and had a good experience. The nurses were great!

pick your OB and see where they deliver. I went o OB Gyn West - they have an EP office and Minnetonka office - right off 394 near Ridgedale and I thought all the drs were great!

  • I'm also in Minnetonka and delivered at Southdale.  DD was born at 34wks and was in the Special Care Nursery for 23 days.  Other than the obvious stress of having a preemie, we had a very good experience there.  The L&D and SCN staff were excellent!

I second the recommendation for Ob/Gyn West.  I saw Dr. Larson at their Minnetonka office and will see her again for future pregnancies.  She provided excellent care throughout my pregnancy, was awesome when I had pre-e, and got us through a challenging delivery.
