17 month old climbing(?) out of crib?

Katie will be 17 months old next week. I thought we had plenty of time before she'd manage to get out of her crib on her own. This afternoon I was on my way down the hall to get her from a nap when I heard a thump. I opened her door and she was on the floor next to her crib. When she saw me she cried and I immediately picked her up. After less than 30 seconds she smiled and looked pretty proud of herself. While I was relieved to see that she was okay, but I can't get over the fact that she thinks was something cool.

The mattress is already in the lowest position. There is nothing in the crib for her to step/climb on. We're planning on moving her into a bed in a couple of months to prepare for her sibling. I've been a little worried about moving her out of the crib at such a young age, but now I guess it's a good thing? Anyone else with a climber this young? We're thinking about putting pillows around her crib in case she tries this again. I'm not sure what else to do.

Wow! That does seem young. I remember, vividly!, climbing out of my crib, but I am guessing I was a bit older since I can remember it. I think the pillows are a good idea. Glad she wasn't hurt.

Oh no, glad to hear she was OK. Adrian climbed out of the crib at a hotel we stayed in last month. Those hotel cribs are smaller and the railing is lower, but still, it's a matter of time until he figures out how to climb out of his crib at home. I don't know what the solution is Hmm

In my opinion, if they are climbing out of the crib, it is time for a toddler bed and baby gate on the bedroom door. They can get seriously hurt climbing out of the crib.I have seen it. A friend of mine's little one was climbing out of her crib got her little arm caught somehow going over, broker her arm and when she hit the floor she cut her head open and needed stitches. it was terrible. toddler bed time mama!

Ooh scary!. You know if she did it once, she'll do it again. Maybe until you get her set up in a bed, you should put some pillows on the floor by the crib.

Sienna has been pulling her leg up to the rail but I always stop her before she succeeds.I am dreading hearing that thump sound. We have the rubber floor mat next to the crib but that isn't going to stop her from possibly getting hurt.

My sisiter's daughter was climbing out of her crib at 14 months! Yikes!

Yeah, I think I vote toddler bed, too. I think I'd rather have Margaux wreak a little (baby gate controlled) havok in the middle of the night than fall and possibly hurt herself.
