Need help - flying with frozen breast mik

We are flying next week and need to bring enough frozen breastmilk with us for a week. I have no idea how to transport it. Has anyone done this before did you use dry ice? If so, what type of container did you use and how did you pack it? If you used something else please share what you used and how you packed it. We will need to keep everything frozen for at least 8 hours. TIA

  • I don't have experience but I've known others that used dry ice. I would pack it in a cooler and check it underneath the plane. I have traveled with fresh BM through airport security and it wasn't fun. The TSA person checked every single bag of BM. So if you're going to be taking a week's worth supply, I would probably check most of it and just carry on a two day supply just to be safe.

  • I don't have any advice for transporting frozen milk, but what I do when traveling is use frozen milk and save up fresh pumped milk before leaving.  Since fresh BM can be stored under refrigeration for 8 days it's much easier to deal with.

  • Well, I would be most concerned with how to keep milk completely frozen for 8 hours.  If it defrosts even a little bit, then I wouldn't want to refreeze it.  So, I would think dry ice or lots of cooler packs.  And a really good quality cooler.

I would call the airline and ask if it's going to be a problem to carry-on 200+ ounces of milk.  The most I've ever carried on is about 20 ounces.

  • You may want to verify with your airline as to whether or not you can check baggage with dry ice.  Some do not allow any and others allow certain amounts. I wouldn't want to get to the airport and find out that I couldn't check it.
  • Where are you going on the other end? You may also want to consider shipping it ahead via fedex/ups rather than carrying it on the plane. I've done that when traveling for work before (shipped it home)
