1st Trimester

XP - Anyone on Metformin for PCOS?

I remember my dr. saying she took Metformin through all of her pregnancies for PCOS, but DH has me doubting myself now...anyone else on Metformin? I see the dr. on Tuesday...should I keep taking it or stop taking it until then?

  • I took it through the first trimester.

  • I'm on it until 14 wks.
  • I'm on it until 2nd tri. I was told it can help to prevent miscarriage in those with PCOS in the 1st tri :)

  • I'm diabetic, and pretty sure I'll be taking it all through my pregnancy.

  • you are going to get different answers on this one as the studies aren't that conclusive either way.

my doctor had me stop taking metformin as soon as I found out i was pregnant. she doesn't think the studies are legit that says it could help with M/s and she thinks just like any other medicine, it should be avoided when pregnant.

can you just call your doctor today and see what they think?

  • I was prescribed Metformin by a previous OB and when I went to my new OB once I found out I was pregnant they decided to keep me on it. I also read several studies on my own and spoke with both my prior OB and current OB about staying on the medication. Everything pointed to it helping prevent miscarriage in PCOS and it is a substance that has no risk of harming the fetus so there is no reason to not take it if you OB thinks you should stay on it. But you should call your OB tomorrow and find out what they think.
  • Also, I don't know how your Metformin was prescribed, but it is never a good idea to just stop a medication. It could actually be harmful to you to do so without talking to your doctor first.
  • I'm on Metformin until I reach my second trimester.  I agree with calling your OB and getting their opinion.

I would call, but they're closed on Sunday and are going to be closed tomorrow. I guess I'll just keep taking it and see what she says on Tuesday. Thanks!

  • I have PCOS and have been taking Metformin. My OB wants to continue though the first trimester but discontinue use at the end of this month. She did not seem concern about the change in medication by discontinuing it. I think it really just helps us avoid the risk of miscarriage in the first trimester.

  • I was on it through 13 weeks last time. I'm with a midwife practice this time around, so we'll see what they say, but I'll definitely be on it at least through 9 weeks while I'm with the RE.

  • I am currently taking 2000mg of Metformin ER.  1000mg twice a day.  I called my doctor today because I only have 2 pills left (enough for tonight).  I don't want to refill 120 pills for just a few more days.  So I asked if they wanted to call in a script for 4 more days (11weeks 6 days).  They said nope, just stop them tonight and stop my progesterone supps on Thursday night.  I'm 12 weeks on Friday!  I also have an ultra sound appointment on Friday.  I'm praying hard that baby will be okay
