Postpartum Depression

anti-depressants and weight gain

Hi :) I'm new here and was just diagnosed with PPD. I've really appreciated reading the posts on this board because I've felt so alone lately and I haven't told anyone about my diagnoses. The doctor put me on 10mg of Lexapro. I've had some sleepiness, dizziness, and dry mouth, but I read in an earlier thread this usually goes away. I was wondering about weight gain too. My self-image hasn't been too good post-baby, and I know weight gain can be a side effect of anti-depressants. What has your experience been with weight gain? Has the anti-depressant changed your eating habits at all? I've noticed I've been hungrier, but I'm also nursing and I can't tell if it's from the medicine or my DD's needs. Thank you for any input.

Re: anti-depressants and weight gain

  • Unfortunately, yes, I've gained quite a bit (20 lbs) in the 10 months I've been on Zoloft (very similar to Lexapro). Side effects are different for everyone, though.

  • I haven't gained, but I haven't lost since I started Zoloft about 2.5 months ago. I just started paying attention to what I am eating- I was skipping meals and then binging to keep up with caloric intake for breastfeeding. I would try keeping track of the foods you are eating to see if that could be part of the problem. I'm frustrated about my size, but if it's the medication I will deal with it because extra lbs are a lot better to deal with than the depression! GL!
