Help Me Help Ella Poop!

I have a call in to the pedi (waiting for a call back), called the nurse advice line (they told me to wait until it has been a week) and poor Ella is miserable. She has never had a problem with pooping. It has been since Tuesday since she has pooped. She is miserable and is straining so hard. Please help Ella poop. Suggestions?

Re: Help Me Help Ella Poop!

  • The thermometer trick always works for my Ella when she is having a hard time pooping.

  • Poor baby :( I know what you are going through. DD is constipated all the time. The only thing that helps her stay regular is if we feed her prunes. Have you tried that? I make my own baby food so I just put the prunes in some water to plumps them up a little, then puree them. She eats a few oz of those and she is good to go!

Pear juice helps too, but not as well as the prunes...HTH!

  • have you tried an infant supository? If you can't find infant ones, break the child one in half before putting it in. I would also give her 1-2 oz prune juice in her bottle if you bottle feed every other feeding till she goes. This is a contstant sturggle at my house....

  • Definitely prunes.  Good luck.

  • Have you tried sticking the thermonater in her butt?  My DS had an awful time sometimes and I have to do this 2-3 times sometimes!! I also feed him a jar of prunes and oatmeal which works great!! Sometimes it works too good and he will poop 5 times a day!!  My pedi said prunes are the best!
  • 1 t molasses in a bottle will clean your LO right out. GL!
  • Take a Q-tip, dip it in Vaseline (a LOT of Vaseline), then put Ella on her back and lift her legs (like you're changing a diaper).  Put the Q-tip in her anus, twirl it around a LOT.  The twirling is the key.  You don't even have to insert it - you can just tickle around the anus.  Keep doing it until the poop comes out.  Abby had this same thing happen to her and I had to "help" the poop out with the Q-tip.  You might want a few wipes on hand, and have a diaper underneath her, just in case.  If it doesn't work the first time, wait a few minutes then try again.  I literally had to stretch her anus with the Q-tip to help ease the poop out.  It's gross, but it was totally worth it to get her out of pain!!!  GL!

  • I've tried this for the past few days: take 2 fingers or so and massage below the belly button. I usually do this w/ LO's diaper off and on the changing table. I usually massage her belly for about 5-10mins and then if she hasn't gone then I insert the thermometer barely so she feels something there & tries to push it out. I would def. get in contact with the Dr ASAP if she's that uncomfortable.

Our pedi suggested giving LO 1-2oz of adult apple juice if it didn't help.

Both of these have worked well for H who has never been a good pooper. Also, the pedi suggested dark corn syrup in a bottle. I think it was like 1-2 tsp. This  did not work for Hendrix but may work for you.

Looks like we will be trying this. I don't have prunes, pear juice or a normal thermometer (we have a temporal scan). Crossing my fingers.

GOOD LUCK! It is awful seeing a LO in that kind of pain. :(
