June 2011 Moms

NBR-Queen vs. King

DH and I are buying some new bedroom furniture for our room. We currently have a queen sized mattress that's about 7 yrs old, nothing wrong with it. We've occasionally mentioned it would be nice to have a king but right now I'm not sold on the idea of it. There's nothing wrong with the mattress we have, if we got a king we would have to buy a new mattress, plus the bedroom set would cost more, plus buying all new sheets, feather bed, down comforter and duvet covers. Here's my quesions:

a) What would the June mamas do?

b) If you have a king is it so much better than a queen that we are crazy to not switch?

Re: NBR-Queen vs. King

  • For MH and I, it is SO much better having a king than a queen.  We are both bed hogs and would NEVER be able to co-exist with a queen.  So for us, yes, it's worth it.  But it won't be for everyone.

  • We went from a double to a King. Didn't even consider getting a Queen. Get a King. You won't regret it.

When we visit my parents we sleep in a Queen and I feel so smooshed throughout the night. The king gives me room to stretch out. And with all the pillows and everything I'm needing lately, the room is definitely needed.

Can you move the Queen to a guest room or something?

  • We have a queen that will be moved to the basement for our new guest room after the baby comes. So if we get a new king we'll have to sell one of the queens we already have.

  • I cannot imagine us sleeping in a queen. Any time we've had to do it on vacation at a b&b or something I spend most of the night hanging onto the edge afraid I'm going to get pushed off!

But, if you've done it for years and you're okay with it, it might not be worth the expense to you.

  • I LOVE our king!  When we were bed shopping after the wedding it was actually DH who wanted the King and I thought we'd be fine with the Queen (we were moving up from a double) - I'm so glad I let him win that one!  Some of his reasons were: when we have kids and they're older and wake up on a Saturday morning they might want to climb in and cuddle, if/when we get a dog I might want him in there (I have never let my other dogs sleep with me growing up, so I'm not sure why that was a selling point!!).

Same as pp, when we have to sleep in a Queen somewhere I feel super squished.

As far as bedding is concerned, it would be an extra expense for you right now, but in the long run it's not that much more expensive compared to Queen sized.  Just be careful not to get a super deep mattress, that's when prices can get out of control and bedding can sometimes be more difficult to find.

  • We have a queen and have more than enough room in our bed even with a giant body pillow and a little dog that likes to sprawl out. Sure I'd like a king somewhere down the road, but it's definitely not a need for us.

  • We upgraded from Queen to King when we bought our house in 2008! I LOVE it! And, if you have a kohls or homegoods near you, you should be able to get bedding without spending a ton!

When we purchased our new set, we were able to open a charge card with the furniture store, and paid it off over 12 months, with NO finance charges. Made it easier to add to the monthly expenses at that time.

  • DH and I have had both. I did love our King... but the sheets/bedding can get so expensive! (That's the one thing I don't like about it.) If you guys own your house, and know that a king will fit, it may be worth the investment.

We have a queen now, and it works, especially if it's just DH and I. There are the occasions where DS has a really bad night-terror spell, and we let him get in bed with us for awhile, and it's a little tight... but we manage. But now that we're about to have baby # 2... I sometimes wish we could get a King again. But we just bought a brand new bedroom set that's specifically for a King size.

It really is up to you, and what you think you need. If you guys do well already with a Queen, maybe save the expense of getting a King later on down the road. I think that is what we are going to do. Wait a little longer, since our mattress is still pretty new... and give it to DS when he's a little bit bigger, along w/ our bedroom set, and get us a new set.

  • We absolutely LOVE having a king sized bed. It's nice for us because we wake up easy if we are kicked or whatever. So, it's nice to have our own spaces when we sleep, and if we have the urge to cuddle, we still have that option, too. :)

  • King, but we co-slept for a long time. Even if you don't officially co-sleep, your LOs will probably drop in for many years when they have a nightmare or rough night. I would definitely go for the extra space! We have a Queen, and I wish we had bought a King instead.
  • If it will fit and you don't move a lot, the king might be nice.  We're mil and move to a lot of places with tiny rooms, so we're queen all the way.  Plus, I get cold at night and it's nice to have DH the space heater close.
  • Oh don't even think about it - get the King!!!! We have a Queen (our master is tiny) and I cannot wait to have a bigger room that will hold a King. It makes such a difference. Go for it!! (I'm totally jealous)Smile

  • We have a California king and would never go back! We stayed at my dad's house over the summer with a queen and it felt like we were on top of each other all night. I LOVE our bed! And I agree with PP that you can find good deals on bedding at home goods. We just got new sheets at macys for 50% off too.

  • I'll be the lone dissenter here :) when dh &i travel somewhere and stay in a hotel, we usually get a king bed and while there are some benefits to it, I wouldn't want it everyday. In a king bed, most of the time I would have no idea dh is actually in the bed too because there is just so much space. I don't like waking up with him So far from me that I can't even reach out and put my hand on his back. Plus we have 2 children so far and while yes, I can see it being a tight squeeze if all 3 children decide to climb in bed with us, right now we have space for the 2 and if it's a little cozy it just makes it more fun!
  • We upgraded from a queen to a Cal. King a few years ago and it has been great. We are both cuddlers, however I still like to have space for my legs since I don't like sleeping with them touching (don't ask, I have o idea why). All the extra space is great, I don't think we could ever go back.

I am the same way but mostly just with my feet! I just usually hang them off the edge of the bed if DH is too close. As for bed size, we just upgraded to a queen from a full and that was really only b/c we wanted to get something other than the twins we had for guests to stay with us! I think a king is a great treat when we stay at hotels but that it'll be a long time before we actually get one at home. I don't know if there are TJ Maxx stores near you but they have good deals on high thread count sheets...

We got ours at Ross for about $20.

  • I actually already bought a king size bed. Reasons: More room for my pregnancy pillow, and I really wanted to have room for the baby to sleep with us when they are older and have nightmares or what not.

With my first child we had a fullsize and we had to squeeze in together if she had a nightmare. I feel more prepared as a mother with the king size. Though honestly....I haven't bought a new bedset for it. I am going to have my DH and brother make one for it. The sizing on this bed is a little different than most king sizes.

  • Definitely get the King sized bed. It's totally worth it!

  • I prefer a queen, which is what we have now. I like being squished up right against DH. My two cats sleep at my feet. I think it's cozy. No complaints. Smile
