C section mamas, how long were you swollen?

I have never seen my feet and legs this swollen in my whole life, even in the last month of pregnancy.  I know it's normal, but it's freaking me out.

So how long did your swelling last?  Is there anything I can do to relieve it or do I just have to wait it out?

Re: C section mamas, how long were you swollen?

  • With DD, my hands and feet were like balloons! Probably for about a week. Pee a lot...that helps get rid of the fluid. Fortunately with DS, I had no swelling. I think it's because I labored with DD for 24 hours, had pre-e, and had the section. With DS, I did not have pre-e and went in for a scheduled c-section, which was much easier.

  • One week or so and it was pretty much gone. It's horrible, I know! I just kept my feet elevated as much as possible and drank lots of water.

  • OMG!  My legs were tree trunks and my feet were hooves!  I couldn't even believe it.  The swelling started to come down starting with my thighs about day 4 or 5 and every day I was less swollen further down my legs.  Feet were swollen until yesterday.  Now I think its gone.  I was the same weight I was at my last OB appt the day I got home from the hospital (day 3) and since then I've lost 20 lbs.  Literally.  Has to be mostly fluid.

As far as relieving it, a good balance of moving around and keeping our feet up, diuretic foods, and lots and lots of water so you pee a lot.  The nurses told me it could take a couple of weeks for it to go away, but I feel completely normal at day 8.  I could see my ankle bones this morning  Smile

I give up trying to get a ticker.  I have a DD that is 2.5 years old and is awesome.  Maybe I'll add a quote to distinguish myself.  Hmmm.  How about...

  • Ok a week or so doesn't sound too bad, lol.  Like I said, it's just so freaky!  I'll up my water intake and try to be on my feet less.

It's hard to stay still since my baby is still in the NICU until Tuesday morning, I'm still trying to nest I think.  Smile

  • Swelling didn't happen for me until after I had my baby, which I thought was weird since I heard it always happened during pregnancy.  Anyway, it last for about 2-3 weeks.

  • Mine lasted almost three weeks, but I think I was given a larger than usual amount of IV fluid due to fever/antibiotics.  The nurse told me the more I walked, the faster it would dissapear. So up and moving Mama!  Just don't overdo it.

  • about 2.5 where it was visible.

I don't think I look swollen now 6weeks out but my rings are still snug.

  • I was verrry swollen (more swollen than even in pregnancy) for about 5-6 days, I think.

  • Ugh, that was the worst!  I was most swollen on my 3-4 days pp.  I felt horrible because I was still so uncomfortable, not sleeping well, restricted in movement because of the C-S recovery, looked like an elephant, you name it.  On those days I was only 4 pounds under my pregnancy weight - after delivering a 7 lb 11 oz baby!  Definitely the fluid because a week pp I was down 16 pounds.  The swelling will stop very quickly and you'll notice a hopefully hefty drop.  I'm 2 weeks 4 days pp now and can say it is almost completely gone, by look/feel and I'm down 27 pounds.  Hang in there, it will go away quickly!

  • It took me two weeks. I wasn't swollen until 4 days PP.  I actually had to go on a prescription because it was so bad.  Drink lots of water.
