DH and I need to purchase a new mattress. We were looking into the "Sleep by number" and a memory foam one but I don't know how good these are. I have been reading mixed reviews. Trying to decide if we should try one of these or go for a "traditional" type mattress. Does anyone own one of these? What is your opinion on them? Anyone recommend a good mattress? DH, me and my back thank you in advance

Re: Mattresses
Hi Beth. MH and I are in the same boat as you.
We are house-sitting for friends this week and had mentioned them that we were thinking about buying a memory foam type of mattress. Turns out they have a Memory Foam Mattress topper on their bed so we have been testing it out. She told me it only cost her about $80 from Overstock.com (and it is a King size).
Might be worth trying a mattress topper first to see if you like that type of bed. It's very squishy...not sure I'm sold.
Oh, that is a good idea. I don't think I would like squishy!
We just went through this...
We got a Temurpedic Rhapsody and we love it! We had a memory foam topper before and liked it so when we went from a queen to a king we went all out. The issue with the Tempurpedics is cost. Our's was almost $4K. Granted, we got one of the more expensive models. I would start with a topper and see how you like it. Keep in mind that there are different qualities even on the toppers. I wouldn't get anything less than 3". Also, the topper doesn't come close to the Tempurpedic mattress. Good luck!
After more than 2 years of fertility treatments, FET did the trick!
IVF March 2012 - BFP! - Severe OHSS = 8 days in the hospital in kidney failure
No heartbeat at 10w6d
FET August 27,2012 = BFP!
It's a boy!

Hi Beth! MH and I went through this about a year ago. He had a memory foam mattress and I had a traditional mattress when we got married. He agreed to use my matrress at first. But, when we moved, we decided to upgrade to a King. He wanted another memory foam because he loved it. I thought we should try a sleep number bed. We went to the sleep number store and we couldn't really get them to a perfect comfort level and they were quite expensive. We looked at memory foam mattresses (they were a brand other than tempurpedic) and fell in love with a pillow-topped memory foam mattress. We have had it for a year and a half or so now and both love it!

Just a follow-up, my sister has a memory foam topper and it doesn't feel anything like DH's old mattress or our new mattress. So, I don't know that it is a great comparison.
There are a lot of varieties/styles of memory foam mattresses. I like soft, but need good support because of my arthritis (it can cause my spine to fuse). MH's old mattress was a traditional memory foam. I didn't like it because it wasn't soft enough for me, but definitely provided more support than a traditional mattress. We checked out mattresses at Tempurpedic as well as a couple of mattress stores after we decided against the sleep number. The mattress we settled on offers a lot of support, but has a little more softness because of the pillow top. We got it at a local furniture store. It was their store brand. It was so much less expensive than a similar model at Tempurpedic that we bought a cherry sleighbed and still didn't pay as much as we would have for the Tempurpedic version.

Thanks. That is a good idea. Maybe I will have DH look at the Tempurpedic (at full cost) then look at a local store that has one similar but cheaper and then pass the idea of the headboard by him.
The big differences are the lack of rolling into the heavier person and you will use every inch of the mattress, including the edges.
Happy shopping!

We have a regular firm mattress with a topper (soft). I think it is better to get the more solid standard and then soften it with a mattress pad if you need it.
My friend just returned her tempurpedic because she said her DH literally was swallowed up by it!
