For those who combo feed

We are combination feeding after LC and pedi decided I wasn't making enough BM both through nursing or pumping. I usually BF DS every 2-3 hours, and follow it up with a 2-3 oz bottle. Couple questions for you who do the same:

1) Do you still pump?

2) Do you take anything to increase your milk supply?

3) How much formula do you follow up with?

4) What is your plan when you go back to work?

5) Are you having any problems with LO switching back and forth between breast and bottle?

Re: For those who combo feed

  • 1) Do you still pump?  Yes, LC said to pump 10-15 after each feeding to boost supply.

    2) Do you take anything to increase your milk supply?  Fenugreek, Goats Rue and just started back on Metformin (I have PCOS)

    3) How much formula do you follow up with?  I produce 1 oz total, so I follow up with 2 oz formula.  My baby is 2 weeks old.  It was 1 oz when he was a little younger.

    4) What is your plan when you go back to work? SAHM

    5) Are you having any problems with LO switching back and forth between breast and bottle?  Not at all!

    1) Do you still pump?  yes, but not religiously.

    2) Do you take anything to increase your   milk supply?  nope.

    3) How much formula do you follow up with?  2 oz or 3 in evenings.  Sometimes she eats it all, other times only partial.

    4) What is your plan when you go back to work?  She will go to daycare at my office so I can go down and nurse.  But I will also have to leave 4 bottles (center requirement).  W/ DS, I would nurse and then the teacher immediately offered a bottle.  Eventually he moved to formula first and then I would nurse later as a "snack."

    5) Are you having any problems with LO switching back and forth between breast and bottle?  Nope, both of my kids have done this effortlessly- thank God!

    1) Do you still pump?

Yes.  I have one cracked nipple, so I pump that exclusively and add it to the bottle for after nursing.  Pump the other side a couple times a day.

    2) Do you take anything to increase your milk supply?

    No.

    3) How much formula do you follow up with?

1-2 oz. of formula and 1 oz of BM until the other nipple heals.  Then its back to just 1-2 oz of formula.

    4) What is your plan when you go back to work?

Same as now.  Nurse some, pump some, formula some.  Hoping to phase the formula out for everything except nighttime feeding.

    5) Are you having any problems with LO switching back and forth between breast and bottle?

No.  We've been using slow-flow nipples and the breast flow bottles.  He gets a little lazy with the latch still sometimes, but eventually gets it.

  • 1) Do you still pump? Absolutely still want her to have a little BM overnight2) Do you take anything to increase your milk supply? Mother's Milk Tea (this is a hit or miss with a lot of ladies), Fenugreek3) How much formula do you follow up with? We combo feed at night since my supply dwindles so bad, dh says in typically gives her a 3oz bottle at her last night feed with me but my LO is six weeks old4) What is your plan when you go back to work? Wednesday in fact, I couldn't give up teaching but I only have two classes in the morning when LO is usually sleeping anyways.5) Are you having any problems with LO switching back and forth between breast and bottle? Breastflow bottles for the win! Never had a problem, and we have some other cheap nipples just in case and LO uses those and goes right back to breast

  • 1) Do you still pump? sometimes. the LC told me that i shouldn't be pumping  yet though because she said that the baby is much more efficient than a pump and what i get through pumping is no indication of how much i am actually producing, but LO is only 12 days old right now so...

    2) Do you take anything to increase your milk supply? 3 cups of mother's milk tea a day and 3 fenugreek capsules. i have no idea if it is helping or not.

    3) How much formula do you follow up with? usually i make a 2 oz. bottle and it's rare he doesn't take the whole thing. the pedi wanted me to try 4oz. bottles and let him stop eating on his own, but at 12 days old, that just seems like a LOT of formula to me, so i limit him to 2oz after every feeding.

    4) What is your plan when you go back to work? i'm pretty sure unless the BFing thing makes a dramatic improvement on it's own, we'll probably go to FFing when i go back to work. it breaks my heart, but this is complicated and time consuming enough when i'm not working. i can't imagine how we'd make it work while i am away from him for 9 hrs a day.

    5) Are you having any problems with LO switching back and forth between breast and bottle? every once and awhile. he gets pretty lazy, but he's always been a lazy eater. once i've got him latched, he usually does a few minutes of lazy sucking and then realizes i am not going to give up and go to the bottle so he tries harder.

  • 1) Do you still pump? I was pumping after every feeding to up my supply, but it didn't work. so, now I pump every 12 hours to make sure my breasts are getting emptied and to monitor how much I am producing.

    2) Do you take anything to increase your milk supply? I have been taking fenugreek and blessed thistle along with reglan. I have not seen any improvement so the LC said to stop taking them.

    3) How much formula do you follow up with? 1-4 oz it depends. Sometimes she only takes 1 and sometimes she takes 4. She is getting roughly an oz from me according to the LC.

    4) What is your plan when you go back to work? I will still pump because I want her to get as much BM as possible.

    5) Are you having any problems with LO switching back and forth between breast and bottle? We have not had any problems, but she has been using breast flow nipple since day 3.
