Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Please suggest books for lo. Kinda long.

So I've been reading to DD but I'm running out of ideas on what to read to her. I want to start reading a book to her everynight as part of our bedtime routine. I've been trying to stick with the thicker carboard books like goodnight moon, the disney shapes & colors books. I'm looking for reading suggestions, I've had a few people tell me to stick with age apporiate (sp) books but what are age apporiate (sp) books for a almost 3 month old. She is my first child, (I have 2 stepsons but they are older & can read on their own) so I've never done this before. So all suggestions/options/opinions are welcome. Can I just go onto some of my favorite little books like clifford, cinderella? Sorry this is so long. TIA 1HT

Re: Please suggest books for lo. Kinda long.

  • My favorite books as a child were the Peter Rabbit books by Beatrix Potter.  They're two sets of them, and I think about 6 or 7 in a set.  My friend got the first set for me so I can read them to my LO when he gets old enough.

I don't know if they're age appropriate, but they're really cute and I love them!  Hope this helps.

  • Eric Carle books are the best!  Start with Brown Bear Brown Bear and Very Hungry Caterpillar.  Also Usborne has some great baby books.  And I like the picture books where you can just point to a picture of something and talk about different words.

I've been reading to my 2 year old since she was a newborn and now reading is her favorite thing to do.  She loves for us to read to her and she 'reads' to us.  It's also fun cuddle time.

  • We've really liked the author Sandra Boynton. She's got a great collection of board books that are short and sweet. I wouldn't go into books like clifford and Cinderella, I'd stick with the short, small worded books that tend to emphasize rhythm and rhyme.

  • I should also say that I don't think it matters what you read to your LO as long as you are reading.  You can read your favorites and your LO will love them all the more because you do.

  • My DD1 LOVED Goodnight Gorilla By Peggy Rathmann.  It is a board book.  She loved it from the time she was a baby until she could read.  I have to get LO her own copy.

  • I think as long as your reading your LO will benefit.  I will say that DS does not look at pictures as well with longer books.  He does do best with board books.  I get them from the dollar section at Target.  There are tons that i bout before DS was born.  It has pretty much made our collection.

  • I have heard many good things about THE QUIET BOOK.   I have it on my Amazon list to get the next time I make a purchase.
  • My favorite children's/baby authors are Sandra Boyton, Eric Carle, and Audrey Wood (who wrote some awesome children's books!).  Also, you can't go wrong with Chicka Chicka Boom Boom.  They have great stories that usually sell in both paper and board books.  The books are appropriate for babies, but most of the stories will carry well past toddlerhood and are great for beginning readers also.

  • I love reading the Sandra Boynton books to my DS.  She writes "Pajama Time"  "The Going to Bed Book,"  "Personal Penguin," etc.  They're board books and really cute.  I usually find them at Target for around $5.
  • At this age, you can read anything to your baby -- so pick up that novel you've been wanting to finish, etc. It's more about the rhythm and basic sounds.

My all time faves are by Robert Munsch.

    I'll love you forever,
    I'll like you for always,
As long as I'm living my baby you'll be.

  • I say read whatever you want when the baby is this young! I really don't think you have to stick with totally "age appropriate." I read some of the longer children's books when DD was a newborn, then moved to the "age appropriate" board books and things as she got old enough to pay attention/be involved.

DD's first favorites were books that light up/play music. We liked "You're my Little Lovebug" (called something like that).

Early fave board books: Sandra Boynton's Moo Baa La La La and Barnyard Dance, Big Red Barn (LOVE this one), Goodnight Gorilla.

Other good ones that we got more recently: Snuggle Bunnies, Bunny's Noisy Book, Busy Bunnies, the Biscuit books (DD loves them), On Mother's Lap.

  • We started with some of the board book "classics" and we'll go from there as he gets a bit older:

    Belly Button Book!

    Pat the Bunny

Guess How Much I Love You

    Polite Elephant

    Goodnight Moon

    Good Night Gorilla

    The Very Hungry Caterpiller

I was going to say the same thing. =) I plan on taking advantage of the time to read magazines and my books as long as I can!

  • Boynton is awesome... definitely get some of her books.
