More First Birthday Help..

So, I've booked her party at a Kindermusik studio and it will be from 1-2:30 p.m. I hadn't planned on serving food other than cupcakes. Is this okay? Or should I plan on also offering snacks or something? It's after lunch time, so I assume the attendees will have eaten (and fed their kiddos) before arriving.

The schedule is:

1 p.m. Gathering time

1:15 p.m. Music Activities led by a licensed educator

2:00 p.m. Cupcakes and Gifts (we'll have goody bags for each of the kids)

In addition to cupcakes, I was going to offer bottled water. What else? The place doesn't have a kitchen and only has a mini/dorm fridge. So I can bring our cooler. I was thinking sparkling juice drinks like Izze for the adults and older kids. There will be two babies younger than Libby and then everyone else will be older...

If I do need to offer snacks other than the cupcakes, what do you think of fruit skewers (will they be "dangerous" for littles?) and raw veggies with hummus?

Or I could even try to be more creative and do an "edible arrangement":

Or I might just order from Whole Foods.Wink What do you think? If you were coming, what would your expectations be?

  • Snacks are not necessary but would be nice. Save yourself some money and just get some crackers & cheese and put on a tray yourself. The Whole Foods platters are a rip off for what you get. You could also put out pita chips and hummus. And/or a bowl of cut fruit.

  • I don't think you need anything but the cupcakes. Like you said everyone should have eaten already and I think the activites are gonna take up the majority of the time. The party is going to be a big hit! Don't put too much pressure on yourself. Everyone is gonna have a blast with the activities and celebrating with Libby! I guarantee you not one person is going to be thinking about snacks/munchies. So take a load off and relax. You have already planned a great party!!! Party!!! We can't wait!!!

Yes  I think some cheese and crackers and a bowl of fruit would be good (I like the idea of skewers but agree with you that they might not be great for young kids).

How many guests are you expecting?

  • P.S. ---I would love some hints/help on what Miss Libby J would like for her birthday.  Gift I'm drawing a complete blank!
  • I wouldn't expect snacks because of the location, activities, and relatively short party length.  The kindermusik here is at a yoga studio (with no table etc) so that might be why I don't even think it would cross my mind to think there would be food other than a cake/dessert.

But cheese and crackers and veggies + hummus would be nice if you do think you need something because people can snack on those without needing utensils, etc.

I really think less is more, it's a kids bday - the focus should be on having fun with the kiddos with the music activities.

  • Thanks ladies, I appreciate the feedback! Sometimes I have good instincts and then start to COMPLETELY distrust them. ARG!

I am going to keep it simple! And Robbi, you're right, the studio is similar to a dance/yoga studio...big, open space with mirrored walls and hardwood floor. They do have big floor pillows for us to sit on and a small table with kiddie chairs for the kids.

Jaime (mom to 3 +1 to be) -- your presence is all the gift we need! Seriously. She got SO much stuff for Christmas. If you really cannot fathom coming empty handed, she LOVES books, so you could bring one that your kids enjoy for our collection.

  • I think cheese and crackers and a fruit bowl would be a nice addition. I carved out the inside of a watermelon and used that as our "bowl" for Bella's fruit bowl, inside was watermelon and grapes, that was plenty!
  • I agree that some store bought cheese and crackers and some fruit would be good...nothing that requires utensils...maybe it's just b/c i am always thinking of food, but i would come expecting at least some light snacks.  not a meal b/c of the time, but something to munch on.  I definitely wouldn't put yourself to too much trouble for it though!
