Massage at 37 weeks?

I scheduled a prenatal massage for tomorrow. It should be all good since i am not dilated or effaced, right? Although I may have to cancel anyway due to the snow =(

  • yes, my last visit my OBGYN said that they are okay until the very end.  She believes that a massage won't trigger labor unless the baby was already ready to come on his or her own.

This.  I have a prenatal massage or foot rub scheduled every week up until my due date (I'm at 37 weeks now too).  Prenatal massages are designed to relieve muscle strain; they do not stimulate specific labor inducing acupressure points - and those points need to be stimulated pretty intensely by direct intentional pressure or needle stimulation for them to stimulate a hormone release that would induce labor.  So unless your body is already producing such things in large quantities and just needs a final little nudge, a pre-natal massage or standard foot rub/pedicure is not going to induce labor.

  • I'm a nationally board certified massage therapist. The only advice I have is... if you have once in a blue moon gotten a massage it's best to wait to get a massage until after you have completed your first trimester. Some professionals believe in some women there is a small chance of a miscarriage, in the first trimester.  If you are someone who commonly gets a massage this does not apply to you. I'm not trying to scare any of you, I just want to inform you. You are safe to get massage to help relieve tension during the second and third trimester. The areas you will want your therapist to concentrate are hips, gluteus, low back, and feet.
