Baby Showers

Who to Invite?

Due to Facebook, I feel like I "know" people probably a lot better than I actually do. I'm having trouble deciding which of my friends to invite to a shower, since I really do keep in touch with people on FB that I may or may not be in touch with otherwise. Has anyone else had this struggle, and does anyone have a good guideline for deciding?

I'm not necessarily trying to limit the number of guests, I'm more trying not to be rude by inviting people who aren't "real life friends", because I know if I got a shower invite from someone I'm not actually very close to, I'd  think it was rude and clearly they just want as many gifts as they can get.

Re: Who to Invite?

  • I'm only inviting people that I (have or would) invite over to dinner at my house...that really helps narrow it down! If you're not close enough to have them over, you're probably not close enough in real life.

  • My rule of thumb is going to be "if I haven't actually talked to them (on the phone or in person) in the last 6 months, they won't be invited."

  • If you do not actually interact with them in person, and on a regular basis, (phone, getting together etc.) then they do not need to be invited.

  • Are they someone you would invite over to your house for dinner/drinks/a party?  If not, it seems kind of rude to ask them to buy you a gift.

  • my rule of thumb.... would i happily attend their shower without a sense of obligation if the tables were turned?
  • I was having the same issue....I decided that I would go by my wedding shower list with these changes: cut the people that I haven't had any personal contact with since then, add people that I have gotten close to in the past 2+ years since.  It worked out to be about the same number as my wedding shower list. Facebook friends will understand...and probably leave a sweet comment wishing you well :)
  • I am so glad to see this thread!!!!  Could anyone provide insight on my situation...

I am highly involved/active in my small church (200 members).  I ran the VBS program for the last 2 years, am the secretary for UMW for 2011, co-teach sunday school w/ DH, chair one of the key committees, sit on two others, am highly involved in the Youth and children's sunday school programs, etc..(May sound like a lot but it is a small church and many of us do double duty)  In other words I spend a lot of time at church and these ladies are my friends to varying degrees... So, when I look at the church directory I have had "personal contact" with 90+% of the female members roughly 90 ladies.... So who do I invite?  Is it better to over-invite or risk not inviting and have people think that I am being rude?   Also, should I have individual invitations and is it ok to hand them out at church (and save on postage)?  ( I am not asking to increase the number of gifts!!!!!!  I really just don't want people to feel left out.)

Also, my bf who is co-hosting will probably want to invite her girls 5& 6 and it make sense to invite my 9yr old niece (we usually treat these girls as "ladies" when circumstances allow).  I also have a few girls ages 7-12 who talk to me almost every Sunday and ask about how "the baby" is... There are a few girls at the church who I am not as close to but they (or their mothers) would probably be upset if they don't get invited... Should we just invite everyone?????

Thank you Thank you Thank you!!!!

I'm having a shower for family and close friends, and then a shower after the baby is born at church for who ever wants to come... :) I've been going to my church my whole life, so I know 99% of the women, but I'm not close to all them :) only about 6 people are being invited from church to the fam. & friends shower... So just having a invite everyone shower might be what you want to do for the church :)

  • I would invite family and friends.  If you aren't sure who your friends are, then maybe your social network is getting out of hand, lol :)

Try to be less concerned about people being offended about not receiving an invitation to your shower.  I wouldn't be offended if I'm FB or church friends with someone and not invited to their shower.  I would just assume that they are having a small shower, or not having one at all.
