When to tell future big brother

DS is almost 3.  For those of you with more than one child, how far along were you before you informed your kid(s) that they'd be a big brother/sister?  Also, how did you do it?

Re: When to tell future big brother

  • Good question, my DD is 4 yrs and she would probably blab to everyone she encountered, so I think we will wait till it's clear we have a sticky baby and we are okay having random people know!

  • DS is only 15 months so probably not until I am showing, not sure how much he will understand.

  • DD is almost two and we shared the news with her pretty early.  The downside - she blabbed to my MIL before we were ready to tell :)
  • ds will be two in a few weeks, and he has no clue what being a big brother means or mommy's having a baby.  and my family already knows, so even if he blabbed it, it's ok.

  • We are in the same boat here.  DD is almost 3 and we're still debating on when to tell her.  I'm thinking we are going to wait at least until I have my dating u/s and possibly until we are out of the 1st tri.

  • He was there when I got my BFP, so we told him right away. He really doesn't understand what it means, but he'll point to my belly when you ask where the baby is.

  • My boys are 3 and 4 1/2. I am waiting as long as possible. My older one is a very curious little one and will ask me over and over again the same questions. I am sure he will come up with some juicy questions as well. 9 months is a long time for that age....I figure when I start really showing and other people start commenting because it is obvious I am pregnant, I will start talking to them about it.

My oldest son was 17 months when my second son was born so it wasn't so hard. There are some great "Your a Big Brother/Sister" books out there. It was really easy using that since they like to listen to the same books over and over again anyway. I will do the same thing this time around for both of them.

  • We told DD a few days after we got our BFP.  She is 3 years old and always pretends that her toy babies are her baby brother or sister so we could not wait to tell her!  I went Barnes & Noble and found the book "Baby on the Way" in the children's section.  We gave the book to her and told her that she was going to have a "real" baby brother or sister very soon.  She was excited!  She talks about it at home all of the time and wants to read the book before bed every night.  Surprisingly though she has not spilled the beans...yet.

  • We told DS the night before our first appointment, since we wanted him to be able to come and see the u/s with us.  We were very cautious though, and just told him that we THOUGHT a baby was growing, but that the doctor had to check and make sure.  After the u/s, we still talk about how some babies don't grow big and strong enough to come out and live with us... so, we have to take really good care of the baby to make sure it grows big enough.  Just in case... don't know why I'm SO much more paranoid this time around, but I thought it was easier to lay the groundwork now than later.
  • We told DS right away.  But he's not talking yet, so our secret is safe with him :)
