Babies: 9 - 12 Months

I'm having issues with my Ergo.

I can wear it front carry and back carry just fine, but I am having MAJOR issues with the side carry. I REALLY want to be able to do a side carry with it, because Simon loves to look around but it's so uncomfortable.

That can't be right, can it?? Maybe it's because I'm pregnant.

The shoulder strap kind of pulls on my neck, and the side/back strap digs into my stomach, which is REALLY unflattering. What am I doing wrong?

Sorry I can't PIP it right now, the child is sleeping.

  • I think its prob because you're pregnant!

  • I HATE the side carry in the Ergo.  Maybe I'm doing it wrong, too, but I had the same issues you're having.  Plus it feels like rocket science to even get it on that way - I went out and bought a ring sling for hip carries :P

  • I'm not pregnant and I find it very uncomfortable...I hardly ever see anyone use the hip carry, so I don't think it's just us?
  • I don't have an Ergo, but can you do a high back carry in that? Lia likes high back carries in the wrap better than side carries. She likes looking around too. I don't know if that will work but thought it was worth a suggestion. :)

  • Yeah soft structured carriers such as the Ergo "say" that you can do a hip carry but no one really uses it because it's not comfy. If you really want a hip carry I suggest a ring sling. It will be super useful with Ruby when she gets here and it's adjustable so no matter what size you are it will grow and shrink with you. Also it's great for super quick in and out! Oh and if you plan to BF it's awesome for nursing on the go and the tail acts as a cover.

ETA- That's what Dylan is chillin inside in my siggy and I wore him in it for H's homecoming if you remember the pictures.

  • We don't take kindly to you AP folks around here Wink

I agree with anabell. As much as both my kids enjoy the hip carry position, it's so uncomfortable for me with my Ergo. Someone suggested I use a ring sling if I want to try and hip carry comfortably.

  • I tritto anabell. The reason it's uncomfortable is the weight isn't distributed properly. Nothing you're doing wrong.

  • Okay, thanks ladies! He likes the back carry just fine but I can't use it while it's so cold outside.

I may look into a ring sling for the NB stage, I had a moby but I lent it to someone and I don't foresee it coming back.

The RS works well at this age too : ) Oh also a mei tai would be a good option for a high back carry so you can wear the bottom strap above the belly and Simon would be high enough to see over your shoulder. It's a good multi age carrier as well. Just throwin it out there.

Ditto everything pp wrote! I LOVED our ring sling when DS was tiny. It was the easiest for in/out errands and was so quick to put on once I got the hang of it. I tried it for a hip carry and I didnt like it. But I probably wasnt doing it correctly.

  • I am a big supporter of my pouch sling.  I love it and it is easy to use.  I used it DD1 up until 5 months ago.  DD2 loves it still.  It is easier than pulling out the double stroller in most cases.  You can use the pouch/ring sling from birth on up.  The hip carry and the kangaroo carry are my two favorite.
