He is in the hospital now and it seems he had a mini-stroke.
Background is that my dad is 84 years old. He has a few health problems (diabetes, poor kidney function, he had quintuple bypass 11 years ago). He was doing pretty well though. Like my mom and I could go away for weekend retreats, he didn't need 24/7 care or anything. He could fix himself breakfast and make lunch. He still did their taxes every year. He just wasn't real stready on his feet and took quite a few meds.
So b/f Christmas he had a stress test done as he hadn't had one in 3 years. They saw a little something, so they wanted him to have a heart catheterization done, which he had done this past Wednesday. Well, he wasn't right afterwards he was unsteady (more than normal) and had trouble seeing, but he was walking and could talk, so my mom took him home, thinking he was just out-of-it from the procedure
She called me Thursday to say she was taking him to the ER. He was real bad over night and that day. Was out-of-it, couldn't remember which way the bedroom was. Turns out he had a fever and pneumonia. He started to feel better with his meds, but his vision was still messed up. He couldn't see clearly, sort of like double vision.
So they ran an MRI yesterday and it turns out that he had a mini-stroke caused by the heart catheterization!!!! I am so mad because it was completely preventable!!!! Yes, they found one of the areas they fixed 11 years ago was blocked again, but at his age with his other health problems - they weren't going to fix it anyway!!!! So it was pointless to do.
His PCP is the one that had ordered the test and the heart dr who performed it said to my mom yesterday that he should have stood up to the PCP because he hadn't thought it was a good idea to do the test. Nice to mention that now!!!! They didn't tell my parents that there were any issues to be extra concerned about.
I am really angry and upset. This didn't need to happen and has probably shortened his life even further!!! Sorry I didn't mean to turn this into a vent, I am just really upset.
If you could please keep my dad in your thoughts and prayers I would greatly appreciate it.

Re: T & P's for my dad please
I am so sorry! It sounds to me like you could have a medical malpractice case here. The fact that the cardiologist admitted to you that he shouldn't have done the Cath is unbelievable! He is supposed to be the specialist and it is his responsibility to make the patient, the patient's family and the PCP aware of the risks involved!
This make me so mad for you and your family! Praying for all of you!

I am trying to get past the anger and focus on his recovery, but it is just hard. They only confirmed the mini-stroke this morning, so I am still a little raw. My mom said that he looked better this morning (I was there last night and the night before), he is seeing better too. It is going to be a long road to get him back to where he was, if we even can.

I'm so very sorry for everything you and your family, and especially your dad is going through! I can't believe they caused the mini stroke. I would definitely have words with the board of medicine or someone at the hospital over this, and the PCP.
At the very least they should pay for his care and hospitalization from the stroke since the crap they ordered and didn't warn you about caused the stroke. Heck, if you threatened to sue they'd probably settle out of court and give you guys SOMETHING. Granted I know that doesn't make it better, but at least it would help in such a rough time...
My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone!

i'm so sorry you're going through this. with regards to medical malpractice though, stroke/bleeding/infection are some of the known risks of a cardiac catheterization. if the cardiologist did not mention that while he was consenting your dad, then its important to find out why he failed to disclose that. on the other hand though, if he did have a blockage in his heart, the other possible complication would have been another heart attack from that blockage. plus it sounds like he's deflecting the blame to the PCP which doesn't make sense because he's a physician with his own clinical judgement - if he felt like the cath shouldn't have been done, then why did he do it? maybe that's why they wanted to see if they could put in a stent - the more heart tissue that is damaged, the more likey your dad could develop congestive heart failure which is something that anyone would want to avoid.
how is your dad now? is his vision improving? my thoughts are with you...
Thanks for your input. I am sure he explained the basic risks, but he seemed to say after the fact that he never thought it was a good idea to do for my dad because of his age and other health concerns. He did not mention that opinion before the procedure.
The thing is my dad is too ill for surgery, they never intended to do anything from what they found, at least that is what they said after - b/c one of his artieries that was repaired 11 years ago is blocked again and the dr. said they weren't going to do anything about it.
His vision is improving, he was able to feed himself today and he said he is seeing better. They did the finger test and his left side is weaker, but he can move his arm and hand and all of that. The PT got him up and walking and he did quite well, better than the PT thought he would. He is also talking fine and carrying on conversations. So all and all he is lucky that it wasn't much worse and he is improving.
