Does LO try to help with the spoon?

When you are feeding baby food, does your LO try to grab the spoon and put it in their mouth? DD does this and ends up making a huge mess so I try to keep her hands away from the spoon. But now I'm wondering if I'm damaging her development by doing this. So do you let LO help?

Re: Does LO try to help with the spoon?

  • we usually have her hands under the tray. she usually takes a big bite then decides to eat her sleeves. huuuuge mess. although i kinda let her help yesterday, but she didn't quite get it.

  • DD sometimes does this and when she does, I let her do it but I keep a hold of the spoon so she doesnt end up making a huge mess and she doesnt seem to notice me still having a hold of it = )

  • We use two spoons.  I load one up and put it on her tray where she can pick it up and guide it to her mouth.  While she's doing that, I load up the other and repeat.

It's messy as all get out, especially when she grabs the bowl of the spoon instead of the handle.  But she is learning to feed herself, which is the whole point of solids right now.  There's no fussing trying to take the spoon away from her.  She eats only as much as she wants.  I try to watch her cues and never, ever force her to eat more.

Whenever possible, we strip her down to the bare minimum clothing and keep a few wash cloths and soap in the kitchen for cleanup.  I look at it as the mess is inevitable, so we just go with it.

  • Yes, its a mess!  I think she wants to feed herself now and has started refusing to eat when I hold the spoon.  I've been trying to offer her more finger foods and she loves that.  The other day I gave her one of those "first" spoons that has a soft curved handle for her to hold and put a suction cup bowl of mashed squash on her high chair.  She ditched the spoon pretty quickly, but really enjoyed feeding herself the squash.

I keep a pack of baby wipes on the table to clean her off with and the dog takes care of whatever hits the floor.  Its  meal time for both of them!

  • We do BLW so the few times I've tried giving DD something on a spoon she's totally not into it unless I let her do it herself.  And she makes a huge mess.  I know one person on another board taught her LO to not touch the spoon and now she can't get him to feed himself anything.  I'm not sure that's typical, but something to consider.  It can't hurt to let her help or maybe give her her own spoon to dip.

  • We do the 2 spoons thing. One is the spoon we're feeding her from and the other is the spoon she's sorta feeding herself from but more like just jamming into her face. Mealtime is messy, that's just the way it is :)

  • We do two spoons or a toy or the Gerber lids.  Either way it's messy :)

I've read a lot of moms have success with BLW - seems like your LO may be a good candidate for it.

  • Yes, DS is always grabbing at the spoon to feed himself. I let him do it since I figure it's another way for him to explore and learn how to feed himself. He doesn't eat much yet either so it's another way to get a few more tastes in before he's over it. It is a huge mess, but I'm ok with that.
