VBAC

any overweight mama VBAC success stories?

I am trying to figure out whether I am going for a VBAC or not.  My doctor said that, pending notes from delivery, I should be a good candidate.  I had an emergency c-section based on DS's decels and it turned out that the chord was wrapped around his neck.

One of my big concerns is that since I am overweight, I already have a decreased ability (or so I think, for some reason) of delivering vaginally successfully. I was just hoping to hear from ladies who were successful with a VBAC who are also overweight (or were at the time).

I am physically active and enjoy working out- I actually did a triathlon earlier in the year, but I am worried about this...

 TIA!

  • I was/am overweight, and had a VBAC. I was never told that my weight would be a problem and I didn't think at all about it, though.

  • I think fitness (ie your ability to withstand a long labor) matters more. Good for you!

Overweight moms have a higher chance of c/s but it's not clear why IMO.  Provider bias may play a significant role in that (doctor sees woman is overweight, gets it in their head that woman will need a c/s, is less tolerant of normal labor variations).  I've heard some posters on here say their doctor assumed just from looking at them that they would develop GD and high blood pressure during pregnancy.  So that's a good example of provider bias.

If you have a doctor who believes you are a good candidate and truly supports you in trying for a VBAC, that means a lot.  And the fact that you are physically active gives you an advantage over many women, regardless of weight, who don't exercise.

  • I can't say from personal experience, but I have seen successful VBAC stories from overweight women on the ICAN listserve.  You could ask around there - I know it is so empowering to hear successful VBAC stories from people whose situations are similar to your own!!

  • If you did a triathalon, you must be in decent shape.  I am overweight and didn't even know it was an issue.
