ECV update

So I had my ECV today.  The procedure itself?  Not so bad - I mean compared to childbirth...  There was plenty of fluid and so I went unmedicated which was painful, but managable.

And the best part!  The baby is head down (only took about five minutes) and already quite low!!  YAY for vaginal births!

The down side was that it was supposed to take two hours ish to get there and leave and we were there for eight.  The prep took forever (busy day at L&D) and then my uterus decided to try out labor for a bit.  I was having mild contractions every 2-3 minutes for a while and then they got stronger but farther apart.  Finally at about 4pm they let me eat something and by 6 I was sent home.  By then I was at 5-1-1 but only 2cm dialated and still fairly mild contrax.  At this point (four hours later) I'm just ready for bed - contractions every half an hour or so, but nothing stronger.  So here's to another few weeks to cook!

If anyone has questions about the ECV please feel free to pm me!

  • Glad to know things went well for you!!

I have talked to my OB about this since my LO decided to pull himself out of his head down position and sit breech now. Hopefully he will get his act together and I won't have to share the same experience though!

External cephalic version. It is used to turn breech or transverse LOs.

  • I'm so glad it worked for you! I had no idea it took so long though, my friend who had it successfully a few years ago never mentioned the time and I just assumed it was fast... Yikes! Hoo-rah you putting up with that- a lot of women would have just called it off and signed up for a c/s.

  • The procedure actually wasn't that long - they said it was one of the shortest they had seen - maybe only 5 minutes of actual manuevering?  It was the waiting around for my ute to calm down again afterward that was frustrating.  Not painful or moving anything along, just felt like very regular braxton hicks.  Sitting in a bed, watching PBS on hospital tv and waiting basically.  I would totally do it again if it means that this little one comes out without a c/s!!
  • That's wonderful news!  I was just having a conversation with DH about how I'm feeling defeated by LO's breech position and unsure if I should keep reading my Ina May book until I know baby's head down.  I'm still doing breech tilt positions and practically living on my exercise ball, but I feel like the version is going to be the thing that gets LO head down.  Last time I was so prepared for natural childbirth, reading Ina May's Guide 3x, etc.  I'd like to finish it at least once before I have LO, but it's hard to read right now knowing that a c/s is a much higher possibility than before.

Having gone through the ECV and being a natural birth mom too, WDYT?  Should I be refreshing on natural delivery only to possibly be made even more upset about a c/s, or just focus on flipping baby and quick prepare for L&D after a hopefully successful ECV?

Also, did they have any theories about why it was such a fast flip?  Plenty of fluid?  Optimal pelvis positioning, etc.?

  • I would focus on the fact that you are going to do whatever is necessary to have a healthy baby.  Which means preparing yourself for both eventualities.  If you have the option of a natural birth, you definitely want to be ready, but if you end up having a c/s, know that you did everything you could and that it is the best choice you could make for the health of the baby.  that's one of the nice things about having to have a c/s for a breech baby - at least you know there's nothing wrong with the baby - just stubborn!

I think the reason that my version was so fast was because there was plenty of fluid and the baby was ready.   Although I have to admit that know I'm really nervous that the baby is going to flip back around.  ugh.

Anyway, let me know if you want to keep in touch - I'm on Ina May for the 2nd time!  Do you have a labor buddy yet?

  • Thanks for your thoughts!  It's true that I need to be ready for natural delivery and will benefit from reading Ina May still...but I guess, as a person who was born frank breech, I'm just bitter that breech = c/s now.  You're right that I'll get a healthy baby however he's born, and DH is good to point that out too.  I don't like that the decision may be taken from me though and will affect my future family planning (I don't know that I'd want to attempt VBAC, for example).  It just affects more than I'd like.

Sorry for turning this into a therapy session, lol.  I'd be happy to keep in touch, yeah...and no labor buddy yet.  I'd be happy to do that, and it looks like I may have news to report on you sooner rather than later! :)
