VBAC

Slim chances for my VBAC- support needed

I have supportive docs and a great hospital for my VBAC. The only caveat was a time limit- I have to go into labor on my own (no induction) by 40w/2d since I have pre-existing high blood pressure. That was pretty much the reason for my first c/s; I was induced on my due date and failed to progress. (The data for chronic HTN pretty much recommends delivery by the due date or earlier.) For the last several weeks I have been discouraged by my lack of progress which I know means nothing but I had the same lack of progress with #1. Add to that a growth u/s today places my baby around 10 pounds (DS1 was 8 lbs, 7 oz). Even if I were to go into labor in the next 5 days I don't know if they'd want me to VBAC anyway.

I never really got over the feelings I had about my first c/s and I'm having a hard time thinking about having another one. I always knew it was a possibility but I thought my body might actually give me the chance for a vaginal delivery. I guess I'm just looking for some helpful words to help me cope and be excited about my new LO!

  • Have you looked into evening primrose oil and red raspberry leaf tea?  I don't have personal experience with it but I know others have had success.  Try not to think about the growth u/s, chances are, it's inaccurate!

Go forth and have sex and think positive.  Yes our bodies are made to do this but our bodies also do other things we can't control.  No matter what, you will soon be holding your new baby!!

I hope you go into labor soon, and that your baby isn't quite as big as they're predicting.  My son was predicted to be 9 lbs based on a growth ultrasound and he was 6lbs 15oz - a squirt!  I hope things work themselves out and you get your VBAC.

If not, be assertive with your providers about anything that would help you physically or emotionally before/during/after your surgery.  We'll be thinking of you.

GL and please keep us posted!

  • Don't let them make a decision based on a growth ultrasound!  I know too many people who were talked into a CS because of a "big" baby only for the baby to be 2 lbs lighter than they predicted.  I also know a few women who successfully VBACed babies over 10 lbs.  Good luck and stay positive!  In the end, a healthy baby is the ultimate goal.

  • Thanks for the encouragement. We've been trying to have sex a lot and I've been bouncing away on my ball. I didn't really consider EPO until about a week ago and I didn't think it would do anything if taken for less than two weeks. I have no reason to believe I can't birth these babies- I just haven't been given a fair chance to try. I think that's what bothers me the most. I gave my OB a disclaimer that I would be a wreck if I need the c/s next week. Hopefully if it does come to that I will get to do some of it my way and it doesn't suck as much as the last time.

  • Lots of spicy food!  You can do it...would they consider pushing it back a little?  My VBAC'er was 9 days late...

  • Would your doctor consider a non-chemical induction, via foley catheter or pessary, or trying a membrane strip or AROM before jumping straight to c/s? Good luck! My VBAC was at 40w2d. :)
  • Is your BP still an issue or is it under control right now? Maybe if it isn't too high you can negotiate some extra time with them. Good luck!
