Stay at Home Moms

WWYD? and a bit of a vent.

DD's Mother's Day Out program closed due to low enrollment. I have FT classes scheduled based on the assumption that she would be in MDO 2x week. I have contacted every MDO place in the area and no times will work for me. DH refuses to do an in-home provider and I can't find a PT center. My DH goes to school and works and will be deployed for 2 months this semester so I can't count on him for help at all.

My options that i can think of are:

1 - pay for FT daycare and either take her PT or find a PT job in addition to school (and she would go FT). Funds are tight, but my pell refund and a small subsidized SL will cover  the cost of daycare.

2 - Attempt school with no childcare other than my mom while I'm at class - no study time. Also, no "me" time, which is sorely needed.

Or something else.

Re: WWYD? and a bit of a vent.

  • Is there anyone in your neighborhood you can switch kids with each week for study time/me time?  One of my neighborhood friends takes DD every other week for two hours, and the following week I take her child.

Maybe you can find someone who is willing to do it for a longer stretch of time twice a week (meaning you would watch her child on Monday, for example, and she would watch yours on Tuesday), especially since your DD is older and more self-sufficient?  If you could just get one four or five hour stretch per week (in addition to the help your mom offers while you're in class), that would be better than nothing...

  • Your husband is not being reasonable, he is not leaving you with any reasonable option here.  What is his reasoning behind "no in-home provider"?  There is no point in you going to school if you aren't going to have study time.  It will be a waste of money and time.
  • DH doesn't trust people - it took me a year of convincing to get him ok with the MDO. He's still against an in-home center because he thinks that bad things would be more likely, like there's less regulation and fewer people to check up on each other. I'm not saying he's right. He wants me to put her in the center FT where she formerly had MDO, but it's $95 a week and I can't see paying that if I'm not working.

  • I'd have your mom watch her whlie you are at class. Do you know any teens in your area that could be a mother's helper? She could watch your LO at your home while you are studying.

So the place that just cancelled the MDO class still does FT? And there's room in the FT class?

I would ask them to take your DD on a PT basis. A) They left you in a lurch when you were counting on them - definitely mention the deployment as part of why you were counting on them; B) They have a slot which is unfilled and mid-semester they are not likely to fill it. So they can take you PT and get some money for it or they can make less profit. I would offer $38 for 2 days of care. It's not like having one more kid there raises their costs at all if they have an empty slot (are under ratio and don't need additional teachers).

DD's school does MDO and FT care, but they have never been separate classes. When I have her enrolled as MDO I just take her at 9, which is after the first outside playtime, just as snack begins, and pick her up after naptime at 2pm.

  • i asked them about pt care and explained the situation. they said that i can bring her PT but I would have to pay the FT price regardless to hold her spot. the mdo class was separate from the regular daycare classes.

  • I'm still trying to get over the fact that FT daycare costs $95/week where you live.   It's easily 2- 2.5 times that here.  It's the main reason that we aren't having a second child.  I'm going to have to go back to work at some point in the next year or so and two in daycare (and a child in college) would kill us.

It's a shame that your DH feels that way about in-home daycares.  The woman who watched Ben when I first went back to work was amazing.  She really did love him and I didn't worry because I knew he was in such capable hands.  There really are good people out there, it's a shame that the few bad apples that you hear about ruin it for those who do a good job.

Do you have any SAHM friends who would watch her?  If so, maybe your mom could watch her one day and your friend could watch her the other?

  • I vote for the mother's helper option. I'm sure you could find a teenager or college student a couple times a week. If you're just using it for study time that should be fine. it would also be cheaper. if you can convince your husband you could get a nanny part time, or even better you could share a nanny with someone in your neighborhood. I also think that a childcare swap can be fun for all involved.

  • Considering your DH's feelings about in-home daycare, I would get your mom to babysit during classes and look around for a babysitter a few times a week for studying/me time.
