? for Moms of Babies with Dairy Protein Allergy

First, let me say that I'm sorry that you are going through this. My baby was diagnosed with this today but I'm not really sure that she has it. The only symptom that the Dr used to diagnose it was traces of blood in her stool which also had a little bit of mucus. Otherwise, my child has been a pretty happy baby, usually only crying when she is hungry, stopping as soon as she has a boob in her mouth. She has had some minor spit-up, terrible gas, and she's somewhat constipated but I don't know if those are symptoms of the allergy, or just a very young baby.

I was wondering if you could share what symptoms your LOs had that tipped you off to the allergy and when they developed. I just want to make sure that my LO is treated for the correct ailment, which I suspect may be a fore-/hind-milk imbalance.

Thanks.

Re: ? for Moms of Babies with Dairy Protein Allergy

  • the blood in the stool is the 1 big indicator of the protein allergy.  2nd is mucousy stools.  so yes, if your doctor saw that, then your doctor is probably right and there is a protein allergy. (does not have to be milk, could be soy, or nut protein though)

for us there was blood in stool, mucousy diarrhea.  colic, not a great weight gain.  no sleeping at all.  SEVERE reflux.   I had already given up dairy due to gas problems.  DD was put on nutramigen and after all the BM left her system, most of the symptoms went away.

Why do you not agree with the dr?  Why do you think it is a milk imbalance?

This is almost exactly our experience as well. DS also had a rash. His cheeks and chin looked sunburned. They had that smooth but dead skin look and were hot pink, especially after eating. The rash started improving with the first bottle of nutramigen, and everything else took a couple of days.

  • I kept questioning the diagnosis as well since I have a super happy baby. However my LO's symptoms have continued getting worse anytime I have added back any dairy or soy so I now have no doubt. She hasn't had any blood in her stool but has had mucousy diarrhea as well as massive spit up. She also just acts a bit uncomfortable and is very gassy. She started having some symptoms at 2 weeks old (although I didn't know what it was) and they have continued to get worse with me consuming smaller amounts of dairy and soy. I used to be able to get away with the hidden dairy and soy but I can't do that anymore.

  • Crying at the breast (due to silent reflux), eczema on face, and a gassy tummy.  We actually didn't see any blood in stool until AFTER the diagnosis and I had stopped eating dairy.

I was incredulous about our diagnosis at first, too, but it really did seem to make a difference.  It can take a while to see full results though.

I guess I question the diagnosis because there was only one symptom that matched it. The dr didn't even examine my lo before she made the diagnosis. Apparently, blood/mucus can also indicate a virus or milk imbalance. LO started having some latch issues a couple days ago which made me think that I may have forceful letdown/too much foremilk.

Either way, I'm cutting out dairy for now and I'm getting a second opinion on Tues.

  • My LO had severe reflux, projectile vomitting, mucous in her stool, a rash all over her body, non stop crying, and weight loss.

She has been put on Neocate after trying everything else and she is like a new babby so happy now and all of her symptoms are gone.
