For my daughter I did chocolate because I used colored buttercream icing for the design. I'll probably end up doing the same for my son. Were you planning to have a different flavor? Just do whatever you want.
I was thinking banana cake with cream cheese frosting, personally. Because she loves bananas and goes insane for cream cheese. I was going to tint the frosting green, too, because anything green is a winner in her book. BUT, a certain family member will not stop badgering me that her cake HAS to be chocolate... and has even said she's going to make it and bring it... so... I'm just wondering if there was some unwritten law somewhere in the mommy handbook that I missed. I figured I'd see what you lovely ladies were doing, and if you had been made aware of said law or not.
We will probably do a chocolate cake just because I am a chocolate LOVER but do whatever you want!! We are probably going to do chocolate cake w/ vanilla buttercream icing....mmmmmm I am starving!!!
I am doing chocolate because that's what I like and I am ordering the cake .
If you want to make something else, then make that. Maybe tell the person who is making a chocolate cake that you have already ordered and put down a deposit on a cake through a bakery?

I made carrot cake for DD1's first birthday. I'm not going to get too worked up over it -- DD1 refused to even taste her first cake, so it was kind of a bust in spite of grating all those carrots. I doubt that will happen with DD2, but you never know.
We let DD2 have some tastes of DD1's birthday cake this week. She likes vanilla, but I'm sure she wouldn't mind chocolate!
You know your baby best. The banana/green frosting sounds way funner (if that is a word) than boring chocolate.
We're doing a funfetti like cake. It's a family tradition to make 'wicked rude' cakes, which is essentially vanilla cake with sections of different colors and chocolate frosting. AKA 'tie dye' cake.

My son's 1st birthday cake was yellow cake layered with chocolare mousse and fresh bananas with fresh whipped cream frosting. Since I am getting DD's cake from the same place, I am probably going to get the same thing.
If you are worried about a chocolate allergy or the sugar, there is really no reason to stress too much over it. Your LO will smash more of it around than actually eat it. A few tastes isn't going to hurt.
Ooooh, I hadn't thought of the "drop it" method. I like it!
I had never heard of Funfetti, either, so thanks, ladies!
You poor thing, funfetti is amazing. I think I'm going to do one of the cupcake cakes, where they frost a bunch of cupcakes as if they are 1 cake and decorate it. That way we can have chocolate and vanilla for people. I also just love cupcakes.
Re: Really? Chocolate Cake? Yes or No...
LOL I'm getting no pressure at all the make any kind of flavor. That's weird!
I was thinking we would do like an apple spice cake or something- not sure yet.

I change my mind, we're doing funfetti too!
unless your baby has had tummy issues, I wouldn't mind.
I won't because DD has.. so I will not risk it.
