Kicking and crying when trying to latch on ?

Sometimes (like last night) when trying to latch on, Brody will have his mouth wide open and will thrash his head around almost like he's trying to find my nipple (even though it's practically in his mouth), will kick his feet furiously and then start to cry. After he latches on (a minute or so) he seems fine.

Is this gas? Or could he just be hungry and frustrated that he's not latching on quicker?

  • My LO does this too. He gets so tense and stressed and I can't get control over his head to guide him to my nipple. When he latches he also pulls off and makes face like he just ate a lemon. Tongue Tied Obviously, this doesn't help you but I am interested to see what others say.

  • It could be a number of things... DS may just be over tired and frusterated. Do you know if you have a slow let down? I know some Moms with slow let downs will pump a little before latching LO.

Sometimes my DD does this when she's really tired or has a cold because it's hard to breathe through her nose.

I wouldn't worry too much about it as long as he's eventually latching on and nursing enough.

  • actually he does have a stuffy nose - maybe that's it! Thanks for the advice.

  • My LO does this all the time lately. I've been reading Happiest Baby on the Block for the past couple of days, and it suggests swaddling them while they BF because their limbs may be distracting them. I haven't tried yet, but I'm ready to since it's getting really frustrating.

  • Nate does this too! My friend suggested a solution which has worked pretty well and the pediatrician also had a suggestion we have used.  Friend - give him a pacifier to calm him down, position him, then take it out and have him latch quickly.  Works like a charm most of the time!  Doctor said to express some milk by hand so that he doesn't have to wait for the let-down, which is causing him to be frustrated by not having immediate milk.  This has also had some success, although the pacifier trick seems to work more often.

  • I get a few drops of milk onto my nipple so that he gets that taste right away. Lately (teething I think) I have had trouble getting him on and I'll have him suck my finger as I guide him closer to the boob - bait and switch!
