What name goes with...

Sonya?

DH & I have decided to use the name Sonya for DD#2 to honor my best friend that passed away a number of years ago.  I'm leaning toward using it as a middle name because it is still very emotional for me and for my friend's family (we're still very close).  But, I'm having a hard time finding a name to use that goes well with Sonya.

Any suggestions?  There are several names that work with Sonya as a first name. Should I use it as a first name and just trust that the emotions will fade over time?

Thanks for your help!

Re: What name goes with...

  • I think that you could try using it (for now) as a first name, and see how it feels. If it's still too raw, then I think as a mn would be lovely. You could also use it as a fn with the nn "Sunny," which would be adorable for a baby girl.

  • I like Sonya. It's beautiful! However, I'd try to use it for a middle name.

Try looking at a list of baby girl names and saying each name and then adding Sonya to the end of it to see which sounds the best. Also, write it out a few times and see what it would look like in writing. That helped us out a lot.

    Good luck, sweetie.

  • I would use it as a middle name unless you are really loving the name itself and all the feelings it may or may not bring. You can't guarantee that those feelings will ever go away, even if they fade. My brother passed away 8 years ago and we were going to use one of his names if the baby was a boy, but I never wanted it to be blatantly obvious that that's what we were doing because I wanted to hear and say the name and know it as my child and not my brother.

As for help with what goes with Sonya, it depends on your last name. Our last name is one syllable so we went with a 3 2 1 progression: Madelynn Elise Bray. Other arrangements tend to work too, like 2 3 1 or 2 1 2: Owen Christopher Brown or Nathan John Perry. It's just a tool that I found helpful when trying to choose names that might go with one we wanted. It doesn't always work, especially if the names are redundant sounding. It usually helped to avoid names of all the same number of syllables, creating a pattern helped. Probably sounds weird but it worked for us.

  • I think for emotional reasons I'd keep it as a middle name. I thought about this one and I came up with a few that I personally think sound good together. Hope this helps!

Bethany Sonya, Annemarie (or Anne-Marie) Sonya, Rosalie Sonya, Brielle Sonya.

Ann-Marie was actually the 1st name that popped into my head when I was trying to think of a 1st name for the middle Sonya. I also like the idea of using Sunny. You could do Sunny as a 1st name even not as a NN but the actual 1st name so DD would be named after her without using the name Sonya.

  • Thanks for the suggestions!

Sunny is actually my FIL's nickname, I think it's cute but I'm not sure DH would go for it.

I like Anne-Marie.  My sister suggested Gretchen which I like.  DH likes Annabelle.

I think the trouble might be that our last name is 2 syllables.  Maybe that is why having Sonya as the middle name is tricky.

    Thanks again!

  • Clothilde! (That is klo-tild)

Just kidding, that was my sister's Cabbage Patch Dolls name...Clothilde Sonja.

I really like Sonya as a middle name.
