? about schools

Hi guys,

Sorry for being so confused here, but what is the difference between a charter, magnet and montessori school ?

We've been told by other parents there is a looooooong wait for any school down here that is a "A" or "B" rated school since there are so many "F" rated ones, unfortunately....and it would be in our best interest (N's best interest) to start a search as soon as possible and be ready when the time comes.

Thanks!

  • Wow, I wish I could help you.  We live in a small community so we have public school and the Christian private school.

  • I personally love the Montessori program. My older dds went to a Montessori school from the time they were potty-trained through kindergarten. We moved them to public school in the 1st grade.  We are blessed to have a really good neighborhood elementary school with small class sizes and excellent teachers.

I think the Montessori program helped them become better learners. The  "work" is at their own pace.  I think Montessori is a really good option for preschool. Many programs go through Middle School but I'm not sure what real benefit it has at that age.

I don't have any experience with a Charter or Magnet.  I would think the Charter or Magnet schools would have information nights during the year to get more information so you could get on a waiting list if it seemed like a good match.

  • As far as I knw charter schools are partially subsidized by the department of education and relatively cheap. They are not that great in New Jersey in terms of the program/staff turnover rate.

Montessori schools are private and relatively expensive, but have excellent program (again, I am speaking of NJ).

    Never heard of magnet.

My son goes to a YMCA preschool/day care.

  • There is a GREAT magnet/charter school which my friend's son goes to. Heck, anything is terrific compared to LAUSD. Anyhoo, per the school's website they give a definition of charter and magnet schools. It may help with your questions:

    What is a Magnet School?

Magnet Programs are court-ordered voluntary integration opportunities available to students in grads K-12 living within the LAUSD. Transportation is provided for students who live more than 2 miles from the school. All LAUSD District students, including English Learners, Special Education and Gifted/Talented are encouraged to apply. If a student is continuing in the same magnet program at the same school next year, no new application is necessary. Conversely, if the child?s name was on the waiting list last year, a new application must be submitted to be eligible for selection.

And the school is a Charter School as well?

Yes. Our school is both a magnet and a charter. Three years ago, our school wrote a charter that was approved by Los Angeles Unified School district which allowed Community to become an affiliated charter. The charter allows our school flexibility in many areas of school management (budget, staff selection) as well as school site control over curriculum selections and school-based enrichment. The charter is not a separate school. It is only a document that dictates how our school is managed.

I have also heard good stuff about Montessori programs.

  • Hi!

I went to a montessori when I was wee.  My mom tells me I loved it, and it helps kids organize their thoughts and "learn to learn."  I don't know if the system has an accreditation requirement for schools or what, but the method has been around for a long time.   Good luck!
