Trouble TTC

Urologist

Hey everyone! My Husband had a semen anaylsis done yesterday and they are recommending that he see a urologist. His motility and morphology were a little slower than average.

Anyone got any advice on what to expect at the visit? What kind of tests will they do? Also, should I go with him to the urologist?  This is all new to us.

Re: Urologist

  • My DH had the exact same issues and we were referred to a urologist as well. I went with, for moral support. Basically, all the urologist did was help interpret our results. The lab and your OB's office don't really know how to interpret the results other than "these numbers are below the normal range...go see a specialist". In our case, he said we were fine because DH's count was high, which can help a lot if the numbers are lower in other areas. He also recommended some supplements and said come back in another year if we still weren't pregnant. Not sure how much help that is to you, but it was our experience. Good luck!

  • Thanks, it is helpful to have an idea of what to expect. I am so ready to figure out what the problem is. This is not a fun way to learn patience at all. Thanks for the help!
  • Originally that is the same reason we were referred. Ask your DH if he wants you to go-I was asked to go. We brought a copy of all of our tests, mine and his. The dr looked at the tests, did a physical exam (ours did a prostate exam which make for a suprised and grumpy H), he then told us what the possible steps were but first ordered 2 more SA's and blood work.

  • Hi and welcome!

DH's 1st SA came back low all three, and he was sent to the uro.  His first trip to the uro included bloodwork and a physical exam.  He went back about six weeks later for a 2nd SA.  The 2nd analysis is very important to have for comparison and to make sure there's an actual problem - not that his first analysis was just an off sample or a fluke.  I would try not to worry too much about it until you have the results of the 2nd SA (easier said than done), because there's a chance everything's still fine.

Good luck and come back with updates or if you have questions!

  • Thanks everyone for all the great feedback. Trying not to worry is a daily struggle isn't it. Some days are easier than others. Good luck all! Hopefully we will all have good news soon.  My poor DH is not going to be excited about a prostate exam =(.
