Babies: 6 - 9 Months

If you use a moby wrap

How are you wearing your LO? I loved my moby when DD was only a few months old. But now I try wearing her facing out and it seems like within 10 minutes the knots have loosened and she's sliding down. She's still very clingy so it would be great if I could figure out a comfortable way to "wear" her during the day!

Re: If you use a moby wrap

  • The moby doesn't work very well for bigger babies b/c of the stretch.  I'd recommend getting a woven wrap or a soft-structured carrier like a Beco or mei tai.

  • I don't wear her all that often anymore (about once or twice a week on weekends while I'm doing chores), but I've also had the similar problem of loose fabric.  Can you maybe try the back carry position?  There's how-to videos on Youtube.

  • I only use the Moby now when she's being a pill and won't nap, very rarely.  I have an Ergo and a ring sling that get a lot more use for general wearing!

  • I wear her on my hip or on my back, I was always under the impression that you shouldnt wear them facing out. Either way she seems pretty happy there.

Do NOT use the Moby for a back carry! It is extremely unsafe. Stretchy fabric type wraps do not provide enough support for a back carry. PP is correct, if you like the Moby and want to continue wearing LO after about 12 lbs, try a woven wrap. If you're not too keen on the Moby but still want to wear LO, try an SSC like an Ergo or Beco, or a Mei Tai.

Good to know!  Thanks for this.  I won't be doing the back carry.

  • I loved my Moby, but it started to get uncomfortable for both of us as he got heavier.  I'd have to un-tie it and tighten it up a bunch.  We switched to the Beco and LOVE it.  I have the Beco Butterfly II which is soft, but offers more support than the Gemini.  The Gemini, however, lets you front-carry LO front facing, hip carry, or back carry.  The Butterfly only allows for front-carry facing the parent or back carry.  We figured we'd probably only be back-carrying him anyway at this point, so I opted for the more supported construction of the Butterfly.  Either are great, I'm sure!

  • I tried wearing DS in the hip-carry position to go to DH's graduation last month because I knew the walk would be over a mile from parking to the ceremony site. I should have just carried him - it would have been much easier! I couldn't get the fabric tight enough and I had to support him with my arms anyway. I just bought an Ergo and I love it!

  • Stretchy wraps typically stop working well around 15lbs, for us 3 months.  Then we switched to woven wraps (see example of a back carry with a woven wrap in sig).  Lately we have been using the Ergo (a SSC) a lot.

  • We absolutely loved the Moby but have made the switch to a woven. The Moby is just too stretchy for a bigger baby. (Which is why it's getting too loose for you.)

Ring slings are wonderful for hip carries and SO easy.  I love our Ergo, but if we're taking a quick trip somewhere or are in and out of the car a lot the RS is fast and she can see it all sitting on my hip.  If that's a carry you really enjoy :)
