What to expect when expecting.

So I'm like halfway through this book and it pretty much answers every single question you could possibly have while your pregnant. My doctor told there was stuff in there that she never heard of ie: women's hand cracking from being pregnant.

Did the rest of you ladies read this book? are you thinking about picking it up?

Re: What to expect when expecting.

  • I started reading it and stopped around the 3 month mark. I figure from here on out, I'll read for the next month I'm expecting. I don't want to read it all at once and forget and have to reread. It's been super helpful so far, especially with food and activities that are safe. I haven't seen my OB yet, so I needed a guide for what's next.

Same here. My mom bought it for my DH so that he knows what to expect and I'm the only one reading it :)

  • I've heard mixed reviews about it, but if you all really like it, I may pick it up. I think I have exhausted my Mayo Clinic Guide to Pregnancy already!

  • For men I got the hubby My boys can swim

    https://www.amazon.com/My-Boys-Can-Swim-Pregnancy/dp/0761521674

Supposed to be really funny and good insight to what we're going through. I don't think he read it yet though since he only got it for christmas and xbox games are much more fun lol.

  • I've been reading it and I really like it! It's very informative and I like the way the author write. She seems so personal.

  • I have it and it has been very helpful. A friend of ours works for the publisher and she said they put out a new addition last year because a lot of people didn't like how graphic the old one was.

  • I'll never read it. I think it's one of the worst pregnancy books on the market. The MW group I saw with DD asks their patients not to read it, they think it's so bad.

  • I like the mayo clinic one better since I don't know how accurate the WTEWYE book is (like it said one or two things directly contradicted by my doc)

Hmm What on earth is so god-awful about it?  Did they elaborate?

there are a lot of things in there that cause pregnant women to panic. I can't remember the exact scenario (it's been 2.5 years), but I know there is more than one instance of them laying out what a specific symptom could mean, and they immediately jump to "OMG! Call your doctor, you could be dying!", when, while the symptom may be a part of that disease/condition, that condition only happens to .02% of pregnant women...and the book fails to mention that it is rare. (and I know there are many reviews on the book that say the same thing)

I actually don't know a single person working in any part of labor and delivery that recommends that book. Considering how many people I know in the birth industry, that's enough to stay away. There are better books out there.

  • My SIL said she really liked it, so I bought it. I like it so far, and I think it will get more useful as time goes by and there are more things I may not be aware of. The only thing I don't like about it is how it's laid out with so many boxes and callouts on the pages - makes it a little hard to read, IMO.

My Blog - Taking You Home

  • I got the book because my mom said I just HAD to have it.  Whatever, for $13 I think I have gotten some useful information out of there.   I do think however that most everything that is in the book can be found on their website.  If you are like me and on the computer every day the book might be a waste.

The only thing that I found that might be somewhat contradictory is that they recommend eating Tums for heartburn.  I heard some OBs recommend not taking too many.

  • My cousin gave me a few books last time.  I have read it up the the 3 month mark. I like to read it as that time comes.  I also really like the Everything Pregnancy book.

  • I have it and read through the first trimester. At first I liked it but as I got further into the book, I got more and more anxious. It seems like the book focuses more on what can go wrong. I won't get rid of it b/c it does contain some helpful information, but I think I'll be looking for a different book to read for the rest of my pregnancy.

  • I have it and the Your Pregnancy Week by Week. Between the two I find them helpful but like the Week by Week one better.

  • I haven't found anything in WTEWYE that contradicts my OB. I take that back- one thing. It recommends not using acne treatments with peroxide and my OB said that a once-daily topical solution is harmless.

I like the book a lot. My OB recommends it, in fact, he gives them out for free at your first visit.

  • I read it when I was pregnant with DD and really liked it. It seemed to answer all my questions in the month that I had them!
