Babies: 6 - 9 Months

For those who have LO sleep with a blanket OR Lovie...

When and how did you start using one?

DS sleeps in footed pjs and a sleep sack.  He moves all over the crib at night.  The nights where he wakes up I notice his hand is out, as if searching for something to hold on to.  I also think he would sleep better with "blanket weight" on top of him.

I would like to start using a blanket or lovie...but am scared about SIDS. (Yes, I have been brainwashed to be scared to dealth about anything in the crib with DS.)

Any ideas on how to start?

  • I was thinking the same thing last DD. We are doing Ferber and DH can calm her by letting her grip his finger. I am thinking she might like something to hold on to. Hope you get some responses!

  • My LO has slept with a lovie pretty much since he was 2-3 months. He has slept with a blanket since about a month after that. He also pulls the blanket over his face to block out any light when he is sleeping. I guess I am a bit more laid back that some as I am not too worried about him suffocating. If he can pull it over his face he can pull it off. It's all about what you are comfy with. Maybe start with a smaller, breathable blanket made of muslin (Aden + Anais are great). That may set your mind at ease. They also have thicker "dream blankets" which are also breathable. We use them sometimes at night.

  • We started a blanket in the crib early. When DD was turning 5 months, she was in the hospital for a week. Because she could barely move and couldn't roll over (IV tent), the nurses suggested letting her have a blanket for comfort. With me sleeping in her room and nurses in and out often, I figured it was ok.

She never let go of it after that. Now she sleeps with her blanket and her sea horse. I stopped worrying about 2 months ago (and it's been almost 4 since we started, lol).

  • We started letting DS sleep with his small taggie blanket (I think it's about 12"x12") since he usually had that while in his car seat. He loved holding it and playing with the tags and there were times he'd fall asleep in his car seat with a death grip on his taggie.

I think at about 4.5-5 months, I would let him hold his taggie while he took naps during the day in his crib. It seemed as though he liked having something to hold on to and normally ended up balling the taggie and curling around it.

When the weather started getting a little cooler we tried a larger blanket - around 6.5 months. He has the Carter's Tree Tops bedding and he gave him the green super soft blanket from that set (https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3497253).

I was a little nervous at first, but he loves it and we haven't had any problems. Plus we have a video monitor and I would look at it at random times during the night if he made any sounds or if I was awake. He doesn't have to have that specific blanket to sleep, but it's definitely his favorite.

  • She has a lovey and it's great. She rubs her face on it and falls asleep. I started giving it to her about 4 months when she kept trying to rub her sleepsack on her face. Maybe start with a small security blanket and see how that goes.

  • I was a little nervous at first, but we just started!  I knew DD got a blanket on her during daycare naps and I knew she loved blankets, so we just slowly tried it out.  She does great with it.  It's never over her head or anything, but she can pull it up to her face if she wants to snuggle with it.  She even squiggles around at night sometimes and it always seems to stay around her midsection.  Plus, I want to say I got literature from the pedi around 4 or 6 months that said it was ok now.
  • Thanks Ladies...we will give it a try this weekend and i will update on Monday!

If he can move around in his crib that much, he can move away from a suffocation hazard.  When I was concerned about it, I tried putting a blanket over DS head during play time (like peek-a-boo).  He pulled it off immediately.  That showed me that he is capable of moving the blanket away from his face if he needs to.

This.  We started DS with a blanket and lovie for naps because we were awake and could check him frequently.  He would pull the lovie up to his face, clutch it and pull it away.  It really helps him sleep - he rubs the fabric on his cheek until he falls asleep and holds it almost all night.

  • Hahaha, abrausen, you and I think alike!  I was just thinking about this yesterday.  I saw an article on Yahoo Shine about the best lovies/blankies for LOs, so I went out and bought two from SwaddleDesigns.  Like your DS, DD sleeps in footed PJs and a sleepsack and moves all over the place at night.  We don't use a blanket in the crib, but I think the lovie would be good for her.  Someone gave her one that has a little animal head on it (this one), but she doesn't seem that interested in it for bedtime.  She likes smushing her face on it during playtime, though.

  • We have used a blanket for months now.  He won't sleep without it.  As soon as he could roll/scoot around, I wasn't worried anymore.

  • We use a crocheted blanket.  She loves to play with it when we put her down at night.
  • I'm too scared of SIDS to risk it, plus my LO moves around so much a blanket would never stay on.  What type of sleepsacks are you using?  We are using the Halo brand, particularly the velboa plush dot, which to me feels plenty "blanket weight".  I have thought about offering him a lovie, but feel more comfortable waiting until he's 1 year old.
