Babies: 6 - 9 Months

things that were a waste of money for this stage:

jumperoo - she won't play in it unless i'm sitting right next to her. defeats the purpose of putting her in it to play so i can get something done. i thought she would love that thing :(

bumbo - she crawls right out of it

play yard - screams till i put her where she can crawl all over the room.

UGH!! i couldn't wait to use these things, and now i wish i hadn't wasted our (or anyone elses) money! anyone else kicking themselves for buying something?

space saver high chair.  He has almost outgrown it.

My DS loves the jumperoo, but if he is at all tired or clingy (which is often) he won't play independently in it.  His new thing is that he wants to sit in my lap beside the exersaucer and play with the toys on it.

This. Reese is NOT good at independent play. Ever.

The FP one??  At over 2, my DD still uses it!

  • Ahh, I am with you on the Jumperoo... I need to be standing right next to her or she'll scream her head off.

I'd say all the rink-i-dink little toys. DD has like 2-3 that she prefers and really doesn't touch the rest of them.

But the biggest thing that was a waste of money I would have to say is her nice winter jacket that I just had to have... We can't put it on her for in her carseat (we just use a fleece) and we rarely ever go anywhere when we don't need the carseat. So she has worn it maybe three times (and I paid $50+ for it). Dumb.

good one. my mom bought riley this really nice polo jacket (for like $70) and she always asks why she isn't wearing it... umm, i can't put it on her in the car, so what's the point? haha. she's always wearing her little fleece jacket.

  • I don't think anything.

We bought his jumperoo from a friend for $30 and it now retails for $120 and it was in pristine condition.  He LOVES it!  I'm sad we can't use it anymore because he's flat footed.  They need to make bigger ones.  DS is only 29 inches and it claims to go to 32 inches.  Eh.

We bought the pack n play before we here on clearance and he slept in it downstairs when he was itty bitty.  He hates it now but it was put to use.

There's some little toys he could care less about but what's $20?

  • i would have to say shoes.....he has to wear them when we are outside.  like to and from the car (his fleece one piece doesnt have footies).  but other than that he just kicks them off and screams when they are on.  so far he has 3 pairs of shoes, and only really needed one.  i decided he had to have brown, black, and blue. those are the main colors and all his outfits match atleast one of them.

  • First- responses to a few:
Baby Wearing- I hated my bjorn style carrier- I love my mei tai and moby.  I love my moby so much, I wish I had just spent the money on a Woven so I could use it longer.
Jackets- Ha! Dh just doesn't understand that he can't wait a jacket in the car- the one we have is too bulky- but ds1 got a tremendous amount of use out of it at one point it fit him forever. Last night when I went to the pedi, dh put this winter coat on him and instead of fighting him on it I left it alone and took it off when I got out to the car. I put it on quickly before I brought him in the house so dh would think I used it! :)

Things that have been wasteful- a long sleeve sleep sac- he's worn it 2 times and he's already outgrown it. One of his xmas outfits- wore it once before xmas (wintery- not entirely xmas) and it already doesn't fit.
We've been fortunate that we haven't bought too much for this little guy, since we have a ton left over from ds1.
OH- one thing that would have been a waste had we not used it a TON for ds1- the bouncer seat. ds2 hated it!

  • I am so glad I never bought the bumbo.  I went back and forth on whether to get it.  Since LO was sitting very good on her own by 5.5 months, it would have been a waste of money for us.

  • I don't think we've used the bumbo since he was about 5 months old. He never really liked it and his thighs got too chunky to fit. MIL just HAD to buy one to keep at her house, but she didn't get around to it until he'd outgrown it. Ours was a gift though.
  • We don't have a lot of things that we wasted money on since most of the big things were wither bought for us or given to us.

PnP- brand new given to us from a friend but we have only used it a handful of times.

Jumparoo- MIL bought it but DD will only jump in it if I'm sitting right next to her

If I were to say one thing, it would probably be toys. She never stays interested with anything for very long and she always wants to play with non-toy things. ie remote, phone, paper, cat etc :)

  • --DD has never really liked her swing, and of course that was the most expensive thing we bought.

My Baby Bjorn...used it maybe 5 times total.  DS HATED it and I wasn't all too jazzed about it, either. I found out I'm not a baby wearer.

I am a BW'er, but I hate the Bjorn.  We call it the "crotch dangler."

Same here- I knew I should've went right for the Beco, which I now love.  I ended up giving the Bjorn away to a friend.

He didn't care for the seahorse, but it wasn't expensive so that one didn't bug me.

As for the bumbo- did anyone catch the "Where are they now" 16 + Pregnant update show where the one girl had her 11 month old (I'm pretty positive that was the age) still sitting in the bumbo- on the kitchen counter no less!!!!!!!  Why do people think it's safe to put the bumbo on the kitchen counter when you're a few feet away washing dishes?!?!?!  Not cool teen mama, no cool.

  • The bumbo!  We probably used it 3 times.  I think 9 - 12 needs this thread so we know what not to buy for that stage!
  • DD also doesn't really like the jumperoo unless someone's right there.  Like DC2London mentioned, she also won't tolerate this if she's clingy.

We have an Evenflo exersaucer (the 1-2-3 Tea for Me pink one), and she outgrew that thing really quickly.  It's now disassembled in the attic.  That one was a waste of money, IMO.

For us, the Bumbo wasn't a waste of money, but ever since she perfected the art of sitting unassisted, she HATES this thing.  However, it still never fails to get her to poop if she hasn't gone all day, so I still use it for this purpose.

Bought two coats for DD that have gotten zero use.  I use a bunting bag to transport her to and from the car (or to IL's house next door), and then take it off to put her in the car seat.

Although not limited to this stage, our swing was the single greatest waste of money ever.  Before 2 months, she hated it.  We got maybe two weeks of use out of it before she decided that she hated it again.

For various reasons, BFing and EPing failed after 1 month, so for me, the My Brest Friend pillow, my Medela Freestyle pump, and all of the BF/EP accessories were useless for me, but I'm keeping it around in the hopes that I'll be more successful with LO#2.

  • Graco Swing--LO had a love/hate relationship with it. Haven't used it in about 2 months. It's holding toys now.

Boppy--great as newborn, stopped using it, used it again when she learned to sit up, stopped using it again!

Bouncy Chair--she's too big and doesn't like to be strapped down.

Winter Jackets--I totally agree with all. I can't fit her in the car seat with it so she just wears a light jacket all the time!

Seahorse--My sister bought for me when I was PG and I never knew the appeal of it until I read about it on TB. LO NEVER was into it!

  • PNP - we only used it for 3 weeks before putting her in her crib.  Then I thought it would be great for visiting my family but it's so heavy and a PITA to pack it in the car and put it in the hotel room.  I would have much rather spent the money on a portable crib like the baby bjorn travel crib.  All well.

  • Sophie - My dog has gotten more use out of it than Jack!

Toys - Jack is my 3rd child, so I did not buy him any toys and requested that family not buy any or only one for Christmas, that 12month size clothes were what was needed.  Well, we got a ton of toys, none of which he is interested in.  He would much rather play with remotes, cell phones, cords, etc....oh well!

  • How long were you all expecting to use the Bumbo? MPI was out of it as soon as he could sit supported, but it was perfect when he couldn't yet (but wanted nothing more than to be sitting all. the. time. I wouldn't call it a waste of money just because he only used it for a couple of months. At this age, they blow through everything pretty fast.

As for me: the first swing we bought was a bust. We bought it used, but he wouldn't sit in it at all. The second, travel swing went over much better though--best $15 I ever spent, even though, again, he only used if for about 5 months.

He hated slings and soft mei-tai type carriers, but loves the outward facing cybex we bought.

There are lots of toys he doesn't care as much for, but there is no way to know that until you get to know your kid.

    So it goes.

This! His favorites are a plastic bottle and a tv remote!

Also his coats and shoes. He uses small fleeces too. He has wide feet and most shoes don't fit him very well.
