After having my yearly gyn appt yesterday and my doctor telling me that since DS was sunny side up and thats why he never got into position and I didnt dilate past 4, she felt I was a strong canidate for a VBAC (obviously with some guidelines of how long i labor without progressins so i dont end up like last time). So it got me wondering what the common reasoning for most people's csections are so i thought i'd throw that out there to see what the reason for your c-section or not progressing was.
Re: s/o this c-section talk
I was already at 4 cm the morning I was induced with Connor. I progressed fairly quickly and pushed and pushed and the doctor pulled but Connor wasn't coming out. He never decended and I'm fairly certain that he would have never fit anyways. He was a big boy. But because I did do pretty much everything except push him out, my drs feel like I'm a pretty good candidate for VBAC as well. I do worry about laboring and the whole nine yards and then ending up with a c/s in the end again because she is measuring just the same as he did.
I was progressing slow at first, and then made it to 4 within a few hours and at that point Keira's heart rate dropped with every contraction. They had me turning from side to side every 10 minutes and had me on oxygen. I got stuck at 4 for a few hours and with her heart rate dipping like that I had two choices:
1. Try pitocin to see if we could get things moving along. The thing with trying the pit was that she was having a hard time with normal contractions and the pit would make them more intense. It could have easily turned into an emergency.
2. Opt for the c-section right away without trying pitocin to avoid a possibly emergency.
We opted for the c/s right away. She was already having dips in her H/R and I didn't want to put her at more risk. The goal was a healthy baby so after we made the call we were holding her within the hour. They move quick! Since it was not an emergency we were not scared and I had a really great experience. I'm sure if things went the other way and they had to take her under bad circumstances I would have been freaking out.
I am opting for a repeat c/s so it will be scheduled, we'll have childcare arranged, and the recovery won't be as bad (or so I'm told). I am not too thrilled about 4 nights at the hospital, but I don't want to attempt a VBAC and still end up with a c/s. I'm a good candidate for a VBAC but I just don't want to take that chance and put my body through all of that just to end up where we could have easily started.
I was induced at 41 weeks, 4 days. After 18 hours of labor, with pitocin, breaking my water, etc, I never got past 4 cm. They decided it was best for me & the baby to deliver via c-section at that point.
I'm on the fence. I want to say that at least when I was pregnant, that my practice said they did not do VBACS. I have no intention of changing practices because I like them a lot, so if that's their stance, then I'll do a scheduled c/s next time. If I'm wrong about that, then I will definitely at least talk to them about VBAC and let them help me determine if I'm a good candidate. But the idea of a scheduled c/s does appeal to me...so, we'll see.
At 38 wks I was checked and had no progress at all (after a few checks) and he was really high, so the Dr did an u/s to take a look at his size (fearing that his size might be preventing him from decending)-- the u/s tech estimated him at 10 lbs 4 oz!! So we talked to the dr, she recommended one due to his size and the act that with no progress at all, an induction is less likely to work. But the Dr. left it up to us. I agreed and didn't want to take chances adn we scheduled one at 39w3d
It turned out after he was born we discovered that he had a fetomaternal transfusion, and had lost 2/3 of his blood in utero into my bloodstream. If I had waited until I went into labor, or attemped a vaginal birth he could very possibly not survived the stress of the birth or the loss of anymore blood from the wait. He turned out to weigh only (!) 9 lbs 5 oz, and recovered completely with no side effects.
I'm on the fence about a repeat C or Vbac...probably a repeat C b.c of the scheduling for the dog and for my son, as well as an extra 2 weeks of maternity leave. My first was scheduled and it was a very calm, easy experience, no rushing/labor/etc, just like checking into a hotel. Easy recovery too.
I started labor at 40w5d. By the time I got Rex (around midnight), my contractions had pretty much stopped. Because I was already overdue, the dr. wanted to keep me and see if contractions started up again. By 6 a.m. contractions hadn't really kicked in, still only 1 cm dilated. Dr. started me on pitocin, a few hours later, I was only 2 cm. Started epi, broke water, and still only 3.5 cm. Then Natalie's heart beats started reacting to the pitocin. She back off the pitocin and my contractions never started up on their own. So I ended up with a c/s.
With Claire, I debated on whether to do a VBAC as you know but she was breach so repeat c/s it was.
wouldn't decend through pelvis. never pushed.
(8lb 10oz)
I had a scheduled C-section. I developed inguinal hernias in both groins and the risk of pushing, causing strangulated hernias was too dangerous. I had hernia surgery 10 weeks after the C-section.
