Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Follow up appt

I had my one week follow up appt today and was really hopeful that my body naturally miscarried everything. Unfortunately there was still some remaining tissue and my dr said it could take up to a month for it to pass naturally. So, I went ahead and scheduled a D&C for Friday. I'm really excited about known it will all be over with Friday but am feeling really anxious about the actual procedure and about any risk it could cause. I know some of you ladies have already experienced this...would you mind talking me off the ledge a bit?? Super appreciated!!

Re: Follow up appt

  • My D&C was on a Tuesday the 21st. The actually procedure was fine. You're put under and are asleep the whole time. I was at the hospital for 11 hours, but since I found out there I was Rh-, I had to wait that whole process out. Wednesday and Thursday  after I had light to regular AF bleeding, then Friday, Christmas Eve, after I ventured out to finish Christmas shopping, my cramping was very painful and I passed small clots in the heavy bleeding, but it was all considered "normal" from my Dr. By Christmas I was back to regular AF bleeding.  The following Monday I was only spotting and was pretty much finished a week after Christmas Eve. I would say that my surgery I had for my tonsils was worse than this, well at least physically. There are no incisions, so no stitches to worry about. If you have any specific questions, please feel free to PM me.

  • Thank you so much for sharing your experience. I've never had any procedures or surgeries before and have never been knocked out before so it all just makes me nervous. Hearing what I should expect really helps though so thank you! Did your doctor discuss any risks with you or whether or not this could affect any future pregnancies or fertility? I didn't get to discuss I too much with my dr because I decided to go through with it after our appointment. Thank you again!! I'm so sorry you know what this experience is even like. I can't imagine having to deal with that over Christmas. You're a strong woman.

  • I sent a bit of info to you - but I just realized you might want to know more about being put under since you've never experienced that before.   For me, I was supposed to be at the hospital 2 hours before my procedure.  I signed all the paperwork (they even asked if I had a will - some of the papers you sign are far more scary than anything else!).  It's just normal procedure, so don't freak out when they start asking you really scary questions!

Then they had me put on a gown which is like a sheet with your back hanging out, lol.  They got me all tucked into the bed with warm blankets on and asked me lots of medical questions (do I have heart problems, any previous surgeries, drug allergies, etc and on and on).  The nurse was super super nice!  I wasn't allowed to eat or drink past 9pm the night before (not even water!).  She said she wanted to start an IV to hydrate me again.  This scared me more than anything, but it wasn't bad at all.  They put a little needle in your arm and hook up the iv (the needle doesn't stay in your arm).  My husband distracted me and it didn't hurt bad at all.  Just like you're having blood drawn.  Then they tape it down to hold it.  After that she started the "fluids" which made my arm feel cold, but not painful at all.  The anestesiologist came and talked to me and told me exactly what they would do, then my OB did the same thing and let me ask any questions I had.  Before I was wheeled into the surgery room (on the bed I was already on), they gave me something to sedate me (through my IV no additional pokes) and I just felt tired.  Once in the room, they put a oxygen mask on my face and told me just to breathe.  I felt asleep in like 2 seconds.  I woke up back in my room just sort of tired and really groggy.  After that it was all over.  I just stayed in bed for a couple hours waking up and letting the drugs wear off.  They had a tv I could watch and my DH and mom talked with me.  After I was able to eat crackers and felt okay to walk, they let me go in the bathroom and wash off a little bit.  Then I got dressed and headed home to sleep some more.  I just felt groggy and tired the rest of the day, but not in much pain.  Feel free to ask if you have any more questions!!!!

  • Oh man April I don't know what I would do without you!!! This makes me feel soooooo much better. Just knowing what to expect makes all the difference for me. I feel a lot more confined going into this now. And THANK YOU about the papers warning. I would have flipped if I wasn't prepared for the will question (I'm such a big baby). I hope the staff at the hospital is as caring as it sounds like yours were! I'm so happy you were able to have as good of an experience as can be offered with this procedure. Thank you thank you thank you!!!!

  • SO sorry you have to go through this Lauren but happy for you that it will all be over.  I had my D&C last Tuesday.  I went in at 8:50am and the dr. was behind so I sat in a hospital room for 3 1/2 hours before getting into surgery.  I hope to God you don't have to go through that because that was pure hell waiting and waiting and waiting.  I too had to sign a ton of papers and even sign a form asking if I wanted the hospital to dispose of the tissue or if I wanted it to be cremated.  I thought that was strange to have a chose to cremate so early on (I was 13weeks) but after discussing it with my husband we decided to have it cremated so that we had a part of the baby with us forever.  I later found out from my dr. they should not have given me the form to sign unless I was 20 weeks or more.  They don't cremate that early on.  That sucked having to go through that.  The proceedure was easy and fast I guess.  I had to stay over night due to access bleeding.  They thought it was a molar pregnancy because of the access bleeding but have since ruled that out.  I had to stay overnight for observation because I lost so much blood but I felt fine physically.  I came home with a few medications (for pain and contracting of uterus).  I didn't bleed hardly anything the first three days but since then I have been bleeding more and having more clot like blood and it's a gross watery slimy blood (sorry TMI).  I am a little more crampy but nothing unbearable.  I go for my follow up on Monday and am going to ask dr.about still bleeding because she said I should only bleed for 3-7 days.  I hope it's all over with and I don't have to have another D&C.  Good luck with your proceedure and if you have any questions or need to talk you can PM need  Take Care and ((hugs)).

  • Theresat858: thank you so much for your support:)Ldw80: I'm so sorry it sounds like you had a really awful experience. Thank you so much for sharing what it was like though. I hate that you had to go through the ordeal with what to do with the tissue. They really need to be more careful about situations like that. It just adds insult to injury. I really hope your bleeding stops soon. Hopefully you can at least get some answers at your post op appointment though. Please let us know how it goes. Thank you again for sharing your story. I'm so sorry it was not more positive:(.

  • Don't worry Lauren, you're going to be fine!  As you know, I've had two of these in the last week and since the 2nd one (when th'e blood clot was removed) I've been feeling so much better (physicall).  To me, the best part was being sedated so that I could rest and relax in peace.  The Drs that took care of my sedation were super nice and- though they'll ask you a ton of questions- know what they're doing and do it well.  Just remember, this procedure takes 15-20 minutes, 30 at the max which, in comparison, is a very short time to be under.  My Dr. was telling me that there are procedures where people are out for 24 hours!  You may be a little sore when you wake up, but they'll give you some pain meds in your IV if you are.  I know my Dr wanted me to be able to drink some juice and get up to pee before they'd let me leave.  I was only there the 1st time for 4 hours (2 before the procedure, 1/2 hour for the D&C, and then recovery).  The 2nd time was longer because of the ER part, but once I was scheduled for the surgery I went in at 9pm and was out of the hospital by 11:30.

I know my 2nd D&C gave me more closure then I felt from the first one, hopefully you'll have that as well.

    Good luck!

  • I had my D & C the morning of the 26th (after being rushed by ambulance to the er b/ I passed out during my natural miscarriage). They said I didn't have that much left to remove, but giving how much blood loss and drop in blood pressure they didn't want to risk sending me home. I could have chose the meds (which sounded more painful and risky) or the D & C. My mom and hubby helped decide on the D & C (I think partly b/c they were afraid of bringing me home). But everything seemed to go fine and I was grateful they pushed me that direction. Don't be nervous, they said the risks are pretty low when there are not other complications of the patient. I think I was better able to heal emotionally after knowing the pregnancy was over, I could focus on my grief instead of my physical pain and worries.
