Parenting after 35

Purees at 1 y/o

So Caroline has never been a great eater. If she had her way she would exist solely on peas and American cheese. All of my efforts to feed her table foods have met with resistance and the truth is she really isn't that keen on even Stage 3 foods. She eats mostly Stage 2 purees.

Was anyone else's LO like this at 12 months? Did they grow into table foods on their own or did you have to keep pushing and pushing exhaustively wasting lots of food along the way?

Re: Purees at 1 y/o

  • Laura,

Aaron still mostly ate the purees (though stage 3) and yogurt at 12 months.  He grew into table foods on his own.  I just kept offering him the food and eventually he put it into his mouth and ate it.

It was between 13-14 months that he REALLY started to eat what we eat.  But he's still picky and there are nights when I just feed him yogurt and applesauce (like last night).

So I'd keep offering the table foods (Aaron's first love was mashed potatoes and he still goes nuts for it) and don't worry about it if she doesn't eat it. Just keep offering.

  •  We just started feeding her what we eat in very small bites. She seems to love eating what we eat. We still buy purees because that way I make sure she gets her veggies/fruits daily.

  • Although Ada will eat almost anything she still loves the purees. I'm happy to give them to her - whatever it takes for her to get some vegetables is OK by me. I figure that none of us adults are walkin' around eating green bean puree so we all must transition at some point :-)

  • I still feed her a lot of the purees and Stage 3 foods, especially if I'm in a hurry.  She is very particular about textures - if I give her a new texture, she may not like it at first.  Like cottage cheese.  But if I repeatedly offer it, she gets used to it and will eat it.

We also have a Magic Bullet (the little table top blender) and I'll often put some of what we're having for dinner in there to puree it a bit so it's easier for her to eat.

  • Charlie's 14 1/2 months and still eats mostly purees and some Stage 3s.  He gets really gaggy on anything that's not soup.  But it's getting a little better.  Today's lunch he ate a few McD's unsalted french fries, a few tiny bits of bread and craisins along with sweet potato and corn puree.  LOVES the craisins.

My goal is to have him eat some sort of finger food at every meal, even if it's some fruit, raisins/craisins, goldfish, etc.

And he STILL drinks his milk from a bottle.  (Hangs head in shame!)

  • OK. I feel better. I just keep reading that at 12 months they should be eating what you're eating and we are nowhere close to that.

This!  I give Simon the squeezable foods (Plum Baby) with fruit/veggie puree and he loves them!

  • Finn is almost 1 and a half and only really eats purees and yogurt. It sucks, I hate it but he won't eat any table food except for sweets and Starbucks pumpkin bread. Seriously, he will eat any puree. Any, but hates table foods, bats them away, won't even try them. My pedi is a lot less concerned than me. It annoys me to no end but I can't do anything about it. I refuse to take a hard approach and not give him anything to eat so I will just wait and see. He can obviously eat cause he can eat a slice of pumpkin bread like nothing else soooo...I don't know. At 12 months, I wouldn't worry about it all. :)

My eldest was this way. MIL suggested letting him practice with a straw-style cup for transition to a sippy cup. All of the teething hurt when he tried a sippy and the suction is different. May be worth a try for your little guy. Smile
