Poll: Favorite children's book

What was your favorite children's book or story when you were little?

My best friend's little girl is turning one next week and she requested that everyone bring their favorite children's book as a gift to help build a library for her kids. It can be suitable for babies or even a little older ... I can only find my all time favorite book online for around $100 since they don't make them any more and are so hard to find, so I'm on the search for other options.

Re: Poll: Favorite children's book

  • Out of curiosity, what is your favorite that is so expensive?

  • The Thingamajig Book of Manners. It sounds like the strangest book, but I really think it helped shape me into a well-mannered child/adult. I found some used ones for like $40, but I don't know if I would want to risk that in case its pretty "used" looking to give as a gift.
  • Two of my favourites were Goodnight Moon and The Paper Bag Princess.  DS has both in a shortened board book version - they're nice to have for toddlers.

  • The ones that stick out to me are The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Rainbow Fish and Where the Wild Things Are. Oh and that Stinky Cheese book...I loved that one :)

  • The Velveteen Rabbit or The Giving Tree

  • I liked The Runaway Bunny when I was little and also The Giving Tree.  Now my favorite book to read to my kids is Love You Forever by Robert Munsch.

These were my favorites as well, along with the Amelia Bedelia books and the Mrs. Piggle Wiggle books.  I always wanted Mrs. Piggle Wiggle to be my grandma.  :)

  • I LOVED Golden Books.  "The Tawny Scrawyn Lion", "The Poky Little Puppy", etc...  (Target has a great set of these books for under $20.)

I also loved Ameila Bedelia.  I still have my copy, it's in Mady's little library.

  • I like to give Shel Silverstein's Where the Sidewalk Ends or A Light in the Attic.

  • I agree with the above, but wanted to add On The Night You Were Born and Goodnight Gorilla.  I really liked Goodnight Gorilla because it is only pictures so you can change up a little each time, or have the child help you narrate it, and the pictures include things so you can work on learning colors and that kind of thing.
  • For babies I love the Karen Katz or Sandra Boyton books (silly board books) and my favourite is still Guess How Much I Love You!

  • I also loved the Golden Books - Pokey Little Puppy was a favorite of mine too.  I loved Dr. Seuss books my because they were silly and rhymed.
