Trouble TTC

Introduction and Clomid questions

Hi everyone! I'm also on the adoption boards as we are simultaneously trying to adopt through the foster care system and trying to conceive. We want to have one child of our own and have always wanted to adopt. I have PCOS and have had an ultra sound. Next week DH is going to get sperm checked next week and I'm getting blood work done and dye test this month. If everything goes well hopefully starting Clomid. DH and I are going to Italy in March and thought it would be romantic if we started TTC while there. What I'm wondering is, do the side effects of Clomid stop immediately after you stop taking the pills (so if I take Clomid days 3-7 then we go on vacation days 9-15 or something)? Will I still have hot flashes and mood swings all through vacation? Also, what days do you have to see the doctor when you're on Clomid?

Re: Introduction and Clomid questions

  • I didnt have any side effects. I know many womens that  never had any so you may be okay. Enjoy your trip and good luck with your first cycle.

  • Hi and welcome!

I haven't had any side effects on clomid either...the only thing you should check on is how you'll be monitored while on clomid - I have an u/s on cd12 to see how I'm responding as well as bloodwork 7dpo - so you'll obviously have to be around for any of that.  But I hope that you can fit in a great vacation - Italy sounds amazing, I'm jealous!!

  • Hi and welcome! I just finished my first round of Clomid (50mg). I did have pretty persistent hot flashes, but they stopped literally the day I was done with the meds. The only other s/e that I noticed was quite a bit of bloating. (Or it could be holiday bloat!)

As for monitoring I went in on CD 12 (today!) for an ultrasound and we'll be doing the IUI on CD 14. 7dpo I'll have bloodwork.

I hope this helps and good luck! Have a good time in Italy!

  • Hi, I could go for a trip to Italy right about now ~ have a great time!

I had hot flashes on Clomid ~ several a night, headaches and a sick feeling which lasted while I was on the meds and about a day or two after.  Ovulation was quite painful as were the days leading up to AF.  The only monitoring I had was day 21 bloodwork.

    Good Luck to you!

  • Hi there and welcome. I had no response to 100 or 150 mg of Clomid. I did have hot flashes and slight mood swings and they lessened after the last pill. I would caution you to maybe re think your timeline because it is important to be monitored through bloodwork and an ultrasound while taking Clomid. Your RE (and if you are with an OB i suggest you find a RE) should be checking to see what your estrogen levels are and you will need to see how many follicles you are making and if you have any cyts, etc. There are horror stories out there about girls who took Clomid unmonitored and have since lost a tube or worse. Im not saying it happens to everyone, but it happens.

I am super jealous about your Italy trip. DH and i hope to do that some day! Have fun!

  • I agree with the pp's, you definitely need monitoring on Clomid so I would plan on taking Clomid (or any fertility medication for that matter) when you know you will be available for monitoring.  Aside from the typical s/e's from Clomid (hot flashes, headaches, mood swings), there can be more serious s/e's like OHSS.  Something like that could be caught with proper monitoring and you definitely don't want to encounter an issue like that while in Italy!

My advice would be to enjoy Italy and start any fertility treatments when you return.

Enjoy your trip (I'm very jealous!)

  • I am on Clomid for the first time. I had hot flashes the first 2 nights, and a headache yesterday.

For monitoring, we had Day 2 b/w and ultrasound (for baseline measuring), then we have CD 7 ultrasound to determine when I might ovulate. Then I also use OPK to determine my LH surge (ovulation).

I agree with PPs that you might not want to leave the country- what if something happended? And you needed to see/call your RE?

  • hi, welcome! I had more side effects on 100 mgs than 50, mostly just throwing up and very emotional. Overall, not nearly as bad as I expected.
