Dairy alternatives?

Its looking more and more like DS is not going to be able to tolerate dairy. I'm thinking ahead since he's almost 1 (Crying). What are alternative foods he can eat to get the necessary fats that he won't get from milk?

Thanks!

Re: Dairy alternatives?

  • can he tolerate goats milk/cheese/yogurt? max loves rice milk and soy milk but i don't recall the fat content. canned coconut milk generally has a "cream" layer on it.  you could also add nut or seed butters.

  • Just off the top of my head: avocado, nut butters  (PB, sunbutter, almond butter), EVOO, coconut

Ditto.  Avocados are great for good fats, as are nut products, once he's ready for those.  Cooking things with EVOO can actually help absorption of other vitamins because of the good fats.

  • Can't believe he's almost one!!

I thinkt he PPs had a lot of good suggestions for the nec. fats.  You also need to consider calcium if he can't have any dairy at all. Ryder can't tollerate any form of dairy and I give him a calcium supplement and a multivitamin.  He does okay on coconut milk yogurt and very small amounts of cheese (like in crackers etc) but dairy is pretty much the devil around here.

  • We don't rely on a drink for nutrition. It's a drink - and that's it.  We were using soy but have recently switched to almond because I felt like we were already consuming enough soy.  We actually like it much better.

Anyways - the PP's gave great suggestions. And Emathis brought up a good point about the calcium, but you can it from spinach & other greens as well as lentils (which is also good for iron & other nutrients as well as protein).

This. As you can see from my siggy, DS has some pretty extensive FAs, & most replacement milks are out of the question. I had some concerns about this & his food limitations & how that would affect his nutrition, & his pedi & GI said not to stress as long as he was getting high calcium, high iron, & high fat foods in his diet. Both stated way to much importance is placed on milk.

That being said, coconut milk has one the highest amount of fat out of the replacement milks, hemp milk  has one of the highest amounts of protein.

HOLY MACKEREL! what does your DC eat? That is a long list of allergies...and here I'm struggling with eliminating dairy. We're a big dairy household too...
