Damn it gorgonzola cream sauce!

So last night my DH and I went out to dinner to a super nice restaurant with another couple. No special occasion, except that DH got a bonus from work and we treated ourselves.

I ordered the penne pasta with cream sauce and chicken.  Turns out the sauce had gorgonzola cheese in it.  Didn't realize till I got home and googled gorgonzola that it's not a cheese you are allowed to eat while pregnant.  So I immediately freaked out and my body must have been mad at me, because I was in the bathroom until 1am!  I was miserable and now I'm totally worried about LO.

Tell me I'm overreacting.  Right?

Re: Damn it gorgonzola cream sauce!

  • I eat bleu cheese. Most bleu is pasteurized. Even if it's not - it was cooked. Which means it was heated enough to kill any bacteria.

    I'm sure you are fine.

  • Yeah... I don't think even unpasteurized soft cheeses are on the no-no list if they are heated to the point that bacteria would be killed.  My understanding has been that, for example, gorgonzola on pizza or in a dish would be totally fine without even needing to try get the waiter to find out if they use pasteurized gorgonzola.

(Besides the fact that 99+% of the time you would be fine even eating cold unpasteurized soft cheese, since 99+% of the time it doesn't have listeria living in it.)

  • If it was in a cream sauce, it was probably melted or heated to the point of killing the bacteria, not to worry IMO :)
  • Thank you ladies! It was completely cooked through, so you're all probably right.  I'm just in panic mode lately.

  • You should be fine.  It may have also been made with pasteurized milk, which some gorgonzolas are as I have found.  You should be ok.
  • I became a rule breaker in moderation after 1st tri ;)

The steak gorgonzola at Olive Garden is delicious!

  • Baha! Yes your over reacting. Are you sick? No. Therefor your over reacting lol. The only reason your not supposed to eat soft cheeses is the bacteria that could be present, kind of like cold cuts.  I've eaten some gorgonzola and some blue cheese. Only a handful of times tho.
