Childbirth classes necessary?

I'm 22 weeks pregnant and wondering if any prenatal/childbirth classes are even necessary? I've had many friends who never went to any classes and are fine. I don't want to stress over looking for a class and locations as some are expensive and schedules and work is a conflict.

Re: Childbirth classes necessary?

  • i do not find them all that great they show u how a baby is born (like u dont know) and different positions to help with pain

  • I personally thought it was worth it. My husband and I did a one day class and thought it was plenty. I don't think you need more.
  • It's not like you'll fail childbirth or will be denied childbirth if you don't take the class. TIC :) - I would highly recommend taking a Breastfeeding class instead (if you plan on BF'ing that is) - your money is better spend there...what goes in must come out...BF'ing on the other hand is a bit trickier!

  • I'd say not necessary but helpful.  I thought it was helpful to know about positions and things to do to ease the pain,  but if you're getting pain meds then you might not need it.  Also, it actually got me excited to give birth after hearing the process explained.  Check wit your insurer.  They might cover the classes; mine did!
  • I took a natural childbirth class and it was covered through a flexible spending account.  It was extremely helpful during early labor.  It also helped my husband get a better sense of what to expect and be a better support to me.  One unforeseen outcome is that a lovely group has formed with all the other ladies from my class.  All of our babies are within a month of each other, so we have been able to support and encourage each other in the postpartum period and has our babies grow.
  • You dont HAVE to take them, but I'm glad we did.  Through education, I knew what was happening, what to expect, and it actually helped me calm myself rather than freak out over the unknown.

  • They are not a HAVETO DO.  I know a few people that didn't go to one and were perfectly fine, women have had babies for centuries without classes.  With that being said I was glad I went to one.  I had read all the books but was glad to see the videos and walk through the breathing techniques before going into labor.  We only did a weekend course and were done.  I don't think I would have wanted to go to class every week for months like some friends did.

  • I insisted we take a child birth class and found out later that it was a complete waste of time and money. My body did what it needed to when it was time to deliver, and everything that they taught me went completely out the window!

If you haven't seen a birth before, I would recommend going on youtube and watching a regular vaginal, csection, and induction just so you are prepared for what is going to happen. Other than that, your body will do what it needs to on its own! Good luck with the pregnancy!
