Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Ready for Puffs?

Just wanted to get some opinions on puffs. I haven't bought them yet so I don't know how big or small they are...

Daycare has a new nickname for DS, the food bandit. He just moved up to the next age group and he's the youngest of the bunch. They have "snack time" in this new room which consists of each kid getting some puffs...which he tries to steal.

DS is a great eater and managed mum mums a few times just fine (although he looks unhappy about the taste). He eats thickened stage 2 foods. He is a great sitter, trying to pull himself up and working on crawling. He has no teeth.

Usually I would just try them and see. However I tried a fork mashed pear and that didn't go over so well so I don't want him to choke on these too....thoughts??

Re: Ready for Puffs?

  • DS has puffs every day, and has for a few weeks now.  We started by giving him 2 on the tray and let him try to feed himself.  Then, we would pop one in his mouth.  He played with it and gagged once, but that is normal.

If you want to soften the puffs with water or formula/BM first, that might help ease your fears.

  • Thanks for the replies! I never thought about softening them up beforehand, good call thank you.
  • We have been doing puffs since 7 months. I don't bring them to DC because I really want to watch her when she is eating them and I am afraid they might now watch her well enough (so no finger food at daycare).

The main thing with puffs is letting them feed themself. It teaches great hand/eye coordication and also doesn't involve you sticking things in their mouth (with a greater chance of choking). My pedi just said main thing is let her feed herself, makes sense to me.

The puffs are nice because they get soggy so fast. My DD loves them. I just make sure I don't put too many on her tray at once, because she will shovel them in her mouth too fast.

  • DD eats a few puffs everyday after dinner.  I give them to her for dessert.  She really likes them and does well with them.  They dissolve fairly quick so I'm not too worried about them.  The yogurts melts I dont like giving to her b/c they dont dissolve very fast.

  • We've been doing puffs for a little while now.  He really has just gotten the hang of them in the past month or so.

At first, I broke them in half but that really wasn't necessary & made them harder for him to pick up.  They get soft so quickly that I didn't need to worry.

If he can do Mum Mums he can definitely do Puffs.  We like the Happy Baby organics ones.  DS is nuts about the vegetable flavor.

This exactly.  Except that DD has a preference for the banana flavored ones.  We scatter about 5 - 10 on her high chair tray after she's had her dinnertime meal of solids.  She's become pretty good at picking them up and feeding them to herself.

We do this too...scatter a few on his highchair after he eats his purees. Most end up on the floor (and the dog eats them) but he's slowly learning to put them in his mouth.
