S/O... Loveys

If your LO has a lovey when (at what age) did they become attached to it and what is it?

I have tried blankets, silkies, various stuffed animals, one of those little snuggle animal-blanket-combo things, an astro's ball/blanket (the dog chewed that one up, but I let her have it because DS couldn't have cared less about it), one of my shirts, and currently a sock monkey... Cooper is simply not interested in soft toys.  He doesn't want to rub the silky part or snuggle with it or anything.  I really hoped he'd choose a lovey and it would help his sleep, am I just doomed?

Re: S/O... Loveys

  • You should still have time.  We had various one that he would sleep with, but he didn't really get attached to a particular one until around age 1.  Then, after awhile it HAD to be only that one.  Keep offering them, and maybe he will take to something.  Some kids like tabs on blankets (they have little tabby blankets for his), my DS likes the strings that were supposed to tie to his crib - he rubs them to go to sleep, oh, and also bites his face off. lol.  I think that is more of a teething comfort?

  • Neither of mine really became attached until around 18 months or so, so I think there's still time!

  • DS was 15 or 16 months before I really started noticing that he "needed" his lovey more and more.

  • Evan is built for comfort and has always rubbed his head with the back of his hand to soothe himself. We have a picture of it from our utlrasound. Since being allowed a lovey (at around 6 months) he will rub the ears on his face and eyes when he is tired. Try a lovely with longish ears (like an elephant or dog). That may help. Oh, and I agree with CareBear - the little blankets with tabs all the way around are awesome if your LO likes tags. Evan will find the smallest tag on anything and rub it then put it in his mouth.

  • DS has had his for so long so it is hard to say when he "needed" it, but I would say it was probably around 1 year or a little past that when he became very attached.
  • Sam never got attached to his blanket until he was around 4. Hannah doesn't have a particular lovey, so never.

  • My son will be 2 this month and he never got attached to anything, as hard as tried.  He hates all blankets on him and throws whatever lovey I have tried.  He is very attached to my wedding ring though.  For some reason, touching my ring when he's sleepy instantly calms him.

  • So interesting that so many of the attachments to loveys didn't start until after a year...I just always thought my G was an odd one...lol.

  • Cooper doesn't really prefer one thing over another.  He loves his monkey but I also toss a few things in the crib that he just throws around.  He hasn't stuck with wanting to hold one thing over another.

My sister bought him a Bevo with the horn sawed off (it plays part of the Aggie War Hymn) and we put that in his crib.  He tends to pick it up, but I think that's only because he wants to turn the song on.

  • Neither of my older girls had any kind of lovey, until they were older (Micaela has a blanket that was my brother's that she got when she was 3-4 and has slept with it ever since... Kaitlyn will sleep with anything that she can cuddle with.)

Samantha on the other hand, has a blanket that I covered her with when we lived with my ILs b/c it got so cold in our room... Once we moved, she still had to have it. (At 9m)  She chews/sucks on a corner of the blanket to go to sleep/for comfort.  She won't sleep without it.  I'm guessing this will be a lot harder to break her from than the others with the binky.  lol
