DS is on his 7th ear infection and some have been ruptured ear drums, he is only 9 months old. It is always and only ever been his left ear. He just got off medicine for a rupture and two days later we have another. The *** fluid stuff coming out of his ear is horrible, not to mention his screams when we try to put drops in his ear. We saw Dr. Newton Duncan on the 3rd infection. At the time he had told us if he gets anymore infections within a few month period he would need tubes. It's pretty much been infection and rupture one after another. Since Dr. Duncan is difficult to see, we saw another ENT in the meantime. He told us not to worry about the infections or needing tubes since he has no hearing loss. I'm not in agreement with this. Our pedi says he needs tubes. We have an appointment with Dr. Duncan in January. I am certain he will need the ear tube surgery. Is there anything I need to prepare myself for before and after the surgery? I feel very comfortable with Dr. Duncan, has anyone else seen him?
Re: Ear tube surgery
I took Cooper to Dr. Albright (in the med center) a few weeks ago. Based on the fact that we did 4 antibiotics in a row and he never got better, I opted for tubes. He's been off of antibiotics for a few weeks now, but when I took him in after the last round his ears were still red. I'm 100% ok with tubes - he needs them. He needs something!
Dr. Albright was really nice and we're scheduled for tubes next Friday the 7th.
His number is 713-796-2001. He also sees patients in Cy-Fair on Wednesdays.
DD got ear infections constantly so we opted for tubes when she was 8 months old. She did great with it, the hardest part was not feeding her anything but water or apple juice the night before. She went in for the surgery, came out and was very groggy. She slept for about 3 hours and woke up completely happy - like nothing had even happened.
Her left tube fell out but they had to go in and get the right tube (not surgically, just with a long stick like instrument). She has only had 2 infections since and she's now 6 years old.

love love love love Dr. Duncan! He did surgery on DD2 at 10 weeks old to correct Laryngomalacia (excess tissue around the larynx) and then removed her adenoids and put tubes in her ears at 13 months. Yes, he can be hard to get into see, but IMO the wait is worth it. He made me feel very comfortable with both procedures and made sure that we were fully informed of everything going on. The tube surgery itself is very fast and the recovery for K was very easy (within 2 days she was playing like she'd never had surgery... she was groggy/cranky the first day, but then was fine). I didn't even have time to drink a cup of coffee before it was over.
I know there are several doctors in that same practice that will also come highly recommended on this board, I don't think you could go wrong with any of them.
