Trouble TTC

How much do these things cost?

Does anyone know how much an HSG and a sperm analysis costs?  My husband and I are getting these done next month.  I'm assuming they're not covered by insurance and want to be prepared for the sticker shock.

Re: How much do these things cost?

  • I think with no coverage, the semen analysis is a little over $100 and the HSG about $1300? That's what I remember reading. Call you insurance company and ask if they're covered. Some plans cover "diagnostic" procedures even if they don't cover infertility treatments. :)

  • The price of an HSG can vary quite a bit. Through my RE (they do the procedure and do the interpretation so no radiologist involved) it is $780. I've seen up to $1500 on this board. If you have the option to shop around, do! It's not necessarily going to be the same price everywhere. If you are currently going to an OB, call an RE and see if they have lower prices. I've found you really do need to shop around for everything if you are paying OOP.

  • It can vary a lot. My HSG was a little over $700, my RE did the procedure at a private imaging center if I had done it at a hospital it would have been over $2,500. My husband's SA at the RE was $189. He got one when we first started testing through his primary care doc and it was $120.

    Good luck!

  • My insurance doesnt cover IF treatment but they paid 100% of all SA and 80% of the HSG.  Without insurance the SA is $75 and the HSG is $1280.  You might be suprised by your insurance company.

  • First, you can call the hospital/clinic that you are having these done at and ask for their price line. Most hospital have it. If you speak directly to someone you can figure out the exact price AND if you know your insurance won't cover it they might have a self-pay option to make it cheaper for you.

Second, call your insurance and see what they will and won't cover. For instance my insurance, Cigna, covers none of my fertility testing. However, DH's insurance, Anthem, has covered over 50-60% of his testing.

My HSG was 1,300 but with a self pay option it was 600.

DH's SA was $236 but with his insurance we pay/paid $126.
