To each their own regarding vaccines, but...

I am really upset my SIL is not vaccinating her son until 6 months.  Jason talked to her about it the other night, and she mumbled something about autism being caused by MMR.  And now there are reports the original study linking the two was falsified?!  Outrageous.  To know that this garbage has scared so many new parents into not giving their children life saving vaccines makes me so sad.  Luckily, her son hasn't gotten sick.  But they've been living in quarantine since he's been born, and she's missed out on family functions.  She lives in California--where there is a whopping cough outbreak.  They aren't even vaccinated against whopping cough, which makes me sad.

I dunno, I'll probably get flamed for this, but I had to get it off my chest.  I obviously don't tell her what to do or how we feel.  Like I said, to each their own.

Re: To each their own regarding vaccines, but...

  • Josie had just gotten her 2nd whooping cough vaccine.  The dr. and the guy at the health dept. I talked to said we were very lucky that she got such a mild case and having 2 of the vaccines was why she did.  They aren't considered fully protected until they get the 3rd one.

  • I'm so glad she's doing okay!  I kept meaning to ask you how she was.  And thankfully she had those two doses.
  • At least she IS going to vaccinate him.  But yeah, I get what you're saying.  For me, if they want to risk their child's life by not vaccinating, well, I suppose that's their choice. I mean, even if I believed the autism crap, I'd take an autistic child over a dead child any day.

But what really irks me is that people who don't vaccinate are risking the health and well being of babies who are too young to have vaccines and that small percentage of the population who can't receive vaccines for medical reasons.  They deserve to be protected by herd immunity that we should all help create by vaccinating our kids.

Pretty much all of this.  We wavered on the decision but I kept coming back to having a live child with autism than a dead one.

Yes!  I think that's why it upsets me so much.  Do they realize the risks by not vaccinating?  And yes, she is going to vaccinate--at least, I think she said 6 months.  My husband isn't too sure now when she said she would. *sigh*

It's just the risks they are taking that tick me off.  If they were vaccinated against whopping cough, I'd feel a little better.  But they aren't.  Crazy.

    Yes

  • Totally agree with chrislynd. It's one thing to allow a parent to make choices for their own child, it's another to have those choices impact the lives of other babies and children.

I totally agree with all of this!

  • I cant believe any dr. would go along or advise them to wait that long. I'm pretty sure the dr.'s would have looked at me like I was crazy for not starting the vaccines but the autism issue does scare me a bit but not enough to not get him vaccinated on time. Even after all the BULL.....***...yep I said it I went through to get the flu vaccine for Clark.

This is just the latest newsbit about the original research article... it was published in 1998, then most of the co-authors removed their names after the lead author disclosed that he received financial compensation from attorneys putting together a case to sue vaccine companies (that sort of thing should be disclosed BEFORE publication -- and probably would have prevented it from being published in the first place!), and then about a year ago (early 2010) the journal retracted the research article and it was all over the news then.

I'm glad that the whole error has been corrected, but how many kids in those couple of years didn't get vaccinations all because this arrogant prick thought he could get away with scientific misconduct and fraud??  It's maddening.

  • I'm also glad the article has been retracted and most people now realize Wakefield is a fraud, but a lot of damage has been done, because a lot of people still believe it.

It is very maddening.  To think that kids have died or became very sick because of this guy breaks my heart.  I really want to forward this on to my SIL, but hopefully she's already seen it.  I did post to my FB wall with hopes that she'd see it....Embarrassed
