"the baby was going to be too long so they said I should have a c/s"
Backstory- I lurk a lot on here- my home is more on the AP/working moms board, but anyway. I'm a pediatrician and CLC.
So i had this mom today who was there for a newborn /initial visit. I was going through her records and asked if the baby was breech (since she had a primary c/s). She said no" they said the baby was going to be too long" . I thought i misunderstood her and asked her if she was in labor for a long time, and she said no, that they told her the baby was too long and so she scheduled a c/s. ???
Fwiw, the baby was 20 inches and 6lbs 6 oz. Not sure how that is too long
Re: funniest reason i've ever heard for a c/s.
OMG there is a pedi in SC who is pro AP!!! I feel like I just go to my pedi so that I don't get reported to the bad parenting society or something... I ignore 90% of what they say- like supplementing with formula before my milk even came in, turning my kid forward facing when he hit 20lbs...

How crazy! I was just thinking this morning about how much better of babies would be if we didn't schedule c/s for things like positioning (even breech or transverse). If the woman was allowed to go into labor and see if baby turned I wonder what it would do to our c/s rates and the health of our newborns. (this coming from a mama who scheduled a c/s at 38 weeks for a breech baby and after the section the OB said he looked like he was trying to turn and if we left him in for a couple more weeks he probably could have)
That does seem a bit long for the weight, but wouldn't that be preferable in a vaginal delivery, to have the weight distributed in a long, skinny package? lol My girls were both long, but I wasn't thinking about that when I was in labor. I was thinking about my husband's huuuuuge head. LOL
2 thoughts - I wonder if the c/s was 'reviewed for necessity' by those Dr.'s peers like they review every c/s where DS was born, and really, certain reasons for c/s should start to be grounds for some sort of malpractice/sanction. That is just nuts. "I'm sorry, mam, your child has 10 fingers, which may result in him clutching to your cervix on the way out - we suggest a c/s."
Hahaha... loved this!
