Tell me about Toddlers

Cooper's been walking for awhile now and will turn one next week... it looks like I officially have a toddler.  eek.  So...a little poll about the next few years!

1.  Favorite thing about the second year?  Least favorite?

2.  When did the tantrums really start?

3.  When did your kid(s) stop napping altogether?

4.  When did you move them out of the crib?  Into what?

5.  At what age did your kiddo walk? and how soon after walking did they learn to run?

6.  At what age did you start trying to potty train?  What age was your kid completely potty trained?

7.  When did verbal language really take off?

8.  When was your kid able to use a fork/spoon effectively?

My big boy is bounding towards 4! Baby brother coming in October!

Re: Tell me about Toddlers

  • 1.  Favorite thing about the second year?  Least favorite?  Language explosion! (usually around 18 months).  I love him being able to understand me more and take directions from me (please get your shoes, etc.) ETA: forgot to include the least favorite!  Since he has an opinion, now, he is always "daddy, daddy, daddy", and doesn't even give me a second glance.  I just tell myself that it would be annoying to be needed that much....right??? Sad

    2.  When did the tantrums really start?  15ish months, but they are pretty few and far between, so far.  (He goes to DC, though - so maybe they are more there - but we haven't had many on the weekends).  We ignore them and walk away for now, and that seems to work.  I don't really think they are probably considered "tantrums" (as in what you would associate with the terrible 2s or 3s), since they only really last a minute or so.  They are just realizing that they can get attention that way.

    3.  When did your kid(s) stop napping altogether?  He went down to 1 nap around 10 months.  He wasn't quite ready, but he moved into the new room, and they didn't do 2 naps there. He would be pretty tired after DC and would usually fall asleep in the car on the way home.  He adjusted after a few months.  He still does 1 nap a day (at 21 months).  I don't see that changing anytime soon.  He likes his sleep!

    4.  When did you move them out of the crib?  Into what?  I am leaving him in the crib until he figures out how to climb out.  Hasn't happened yet!  We have toddler rails for our convertible crib.  We will probably convert to a toddler bed, unless for some reason we think he is too young for it.  Then our convertible changes to a full bed.

    5.  At what age did your kiddo walk? and how soon after walking did they learn to run?  14 months.  Pretty soon afterwards.  Since he was a late walker, he pretty much took off as soon as he figured it out.

    6.  At what age did you start trying to potty train?  What age was your kid completely potty trained?  We bought a potty after his first birthday.  I just wanted him to be familiar with it (we have a Bjorn kid potty upstairs and a kid ring for the toilet downstairs - just so he was familiar with both).  I would try to sit him on it before or after his bath and read books on it - just to give him a positive experience on it.  We haven't really "tried" to potty train.  He does like to sit on the potty (when HE wants to), but nothing has come out, yet.  Well...once, but it was a fluke! Wink.  I am deciding not to stress about it.  Also, I am not sure how it all works, as he is in DC during the day.  I don't know if they will work with him eventually, or I am supposed to tell them when I am starting to "try" or what.  I need to ask them.

    7.  When did verbal language really take off? He has always been a big babbler/talker - but I would say at 15 months he knew around 15-20 words/animal sounds, etc.  I almost laughed when my pedi asked if he knew at least 5 words at the 18 month appt. (not to say there is anything wrong with kids who don't say that many words at that time - I was just relating it to my personal experience of my motor mouth son).  I would say he had another large language explosion after 18 months.

    8.  When was your kid able to use a fork/spoon effectively?  He can use a fork, but still pretty inefficient at it.  I would suggest the metal prong forks over the plastic ones.  I feel like the plastic ones really don't "stab" anything, so it doesn't really teach them anything.  I still give him a fork at most meals.  Sometimes he attempts it, but most of the time he still defers to hands.

Cooper's been walking for awhile now and will turn one next week... it looks like I officially have a toddler.  eek.  So...a little poll about the next few years!

    1.  Favorite thing about the second year?  Least favorite?  Favorite and least favorite was the new found independence.  It's great when they want to try new things alone, but hard when you are trying to get out of the house in a hurry and they want to do things alone and take forever.

    2.  When did the tantrums really start? For Joshua is was 9 months until 3.5 years.  Gabriel started around 14 months.  Joshua fought everything.  I don't know if it's just going through it once before or different kids but the second time around was easier.

    3.  When did your kid(s) stop napping altogether?  At 2 and 4 both still nap daily.

    4.  When did you move them out of the crib?  Into what? Joshua was 19 months and Gabriel was right at 2.  The both moved into a twin sized bed.

    5.  At what age did your kiddo walk? and how soon after walking did they learn to run?  Joshua was 14 months Gabriel right after he turned 1

    6.  At what age did you start trying to potty train?  What age was your kid completely potty trained?  Joshua was almost 2.5 and it took a few weeks.  With Gabriel we started putting him on the potty around 18 months.  He has been fully potty trained for a month or so.  We didn't really concentrate on PT until after he turned 2.

    7.  When did verbal language really take off? Joshua was 21 months.  Gabriel was about 20 months.  He went from 5 or 6 words to full sentences.

    8.  When was your kid able to use a fork/spoon effectively?  A little over 2.

    1.  Favorite thing about the second year?  Least favorite?  Over the past few weeks I am just loving everything!  He is communicating so well and he is so funny.  He even likes to tell us that he is funny!  Least favorite is just how headstrong he can be!

    2.  When did the tantrums really start?  Maybe 15-16 months.  They have calmed down lately but we still get one from time to time.  He has very long tantrums and for a while the were happening pretty regularly.  We don't always know what tips him off but it is almost always in the evening once home from daycare.  We think it is a mix of being tired and hungry.  They are hard but it is amazing how all of the sudden he will just snap out of it!

    3.  When did your kid(s) stop napping altogether?  He went down to 1 nap around 12 months.  He loves his naps and has no problem going down for one so I am hoping we won't be dropping them for a while!

    4.  When did you move them out of the crib?  Into what?  We have not moved him out of the crib yet but with the impending arrival of #2 we need to do it soon!  We plan on going to a twin bed and just putting rails on the bed.  Hopefully he will not have any issues...he goes down so well in the crib.

    5.  At what age did your kiddo walk? and how soon after walking did they learn to run?  He was taking steps before his 1st b-day but I wouldn't say he was "full time" until about 13 months.  It seems like he just started running in the past few months...maybe 17-18 months.  He would walk fast before that but that is when it started to look more like a run.

    6.  At what age did you start trying to potty train?  What age was your kid completely potty trained?  We have no plans to start on this anytime soon.  He is starting to put it together when he goes in his diaper which I know they say is one of the 1st signs of readiness.  Everything I hear about boys though is not to push it so we aren't.

    7.  When did verbal language really take off? DS has had quite a vocabulary for a while now.  It is pretty recent though that he has started saying multiple word phrases and he repeats almost everything we say.

    8.  When was your kid able to use a fork/spoon effectively?  We have been practicing with the spoon and fork for a while but I would say around 19 months he became pretty good with it.  Things still don't always make it in his mouth but he can feed himself yogurt and pick things up with the fork pretty well.

  • 1.  Favorite thing about the second year?  the funny things she would say and how the smallest things delighted her, just calling each other's names back and forth Mommy, Amelia, Mommy, Amelia would send her into a giggling fit. Least favorite? TANTRUMS, she is the queen.

    2.  When did the tantrums really start? 10 months, got REALLY bad around 2.5
    3.  When did your kid(s) stop napping altogether? She's still napping (3 years) and I'm not letting go any time soon!
    4.  When did you move them out of the crib?  Into what? 17 months when she was teetering on her tummy on the crib rail.  We converted it to a toddler bed that night and then moved her into her full size at 28 months.
    5.  At what age did your kiddo walk? and how soon after walking did they learn to run? 11.5 months, the same day!  She got really good at running by 13 months 6.  At what age did you start trying to potty train?  What age was your kid completely potty trained? 25 months was when we started and really got it 100% at 31 months.  The 3 day method didn't work for her. 7.  When did verbal language really take off? 13 months though she was already talking and asking for things before that, "mommy, juice" "Lila (dog), no!"

    8.  When was your kid able to use a fork/spoon effectively?

  • 1.  Favorite thing about the second year?  Least favorite?

--Definitely language. I think you never truly know the depth of their personality until they start to talk.

    2.  When did the tantrums really start?

---Around 16 months for both kids. I hate to break it to you, but tantrums start just before 2 but really come to a crescendo during the 3rd year. Everyone I know with kids over age 4 will tell you 3 is harder than 2. The saving grace is the serious development in other areas- like sense of humor and conversation. 3 year olds are naughty but they are even funnier than they are bad ;)

    3.  When did your kid(s) stop napping altogether?

---- Mathis takes one 1.5-2.5 hour nap still at 20 mos. Truitt will be 4 at the end of the month and takes a nap probably 3 days a week.

    4.  When did you move them out of the crib?  Into what?

--- Truitt never really slept in the crib, so we got his big boy bed early, around 16 mos. Mathis is 20 mos and will be in the crib for quite a few more months. Many people I know had kids who stayed in the crib until almost 3yo

    5.  At what age did your kiddo walk? and how soon after walking did they learn to run?

--- Truitt walked at 11 mos. Mathis walked closer to 15 mos. Running came quickly for Tru but Mathis is just starting to run now.

    6.  At what age did you start trying to potty train?  What age was your kid completely potty trained?

--- We started to potty train Tru right before he turned 3. When he stood up in the bath and said "Look what I can do" and peed, we knew he understood the sensation and that he was ready to train. He will be 4 in a few weeks and still wears a pull up to bed. He is still very wet in the morning so we are not even appraoching no night time diapers right now.

    7.  When did verbal language really take off?

--- Mathis has been slow to develop language. I attribute some of that to his 100% hearing loss before his tubes were installed (is that the right word? lol). On the other hand, he has always been communicative without really needing words. His language has literally taken off in the last 2 weeks, going from 1-2 words to 10-12. Truitt was an early talker and had 100+ words by the time he was Mathis's current age. In the middle of his 2nd year, he was speaking in short sentences and was conversational. I don't expect Mathis to follow along that path. I know several 3 year olds who are just starting to get conversational well in to the 3rd year and I think that is also normal.

    8.  When was your kid able to use a fork/spoon effectively?

--- What Mathis lacked in language, he made up for in dexterity/fine motor skills. He uses both hands with equal agility and has been eating with utensils since he was about 8 months old. He still makes a bit of a mess but he can even cut with a knife when allowed! Truitt was eating with utensils closer to a year.

Cooper's been walking for awhile now and will turn one next week... it looks like I officially have a toddler.  eek.  So...a little poll about the next few years!

    1.  Favorite thing about the second year?  Least favorite? He started communicating more which was wonderful but what I loved is how he could understand me and I was able to reason with him (this was toward the ends of his 1's).  This still hasn't happend with DD1 because she is just all out stubborn but I do have to say seeing her personality come alive is great, but then that falls into my least fav since her personality is so much like mine (did I say stubborn already) :o)

    2.  When did the tantrums really start? For DS his started a little after 1 and only lasted a short while.  With DD1 hers started later (real tantrums not really until 2) but haven't stopped!

    3.  When did your kid(s) stop napping altogether? DS has just stopped napping at daycare like a month before he turned 5.  On the weekends it was hit or miss on a nap.  DD still naps at daycare but not so much on weekends (because brother doesn't nap why would she).

    4.  When did you move them out of the crib?  Into what? DS moved to his twin bed a month before DD was born so he was about 18 mths, DD is still in her toddler bed (converted from crib) until the end of this month when she will get her twin.  We did her toddler bed when she was climbing out around 2??

    5.  At what age did your kiddo walk? and how soon after walking did they learn to run?  DS was walking at 8mths and running before he was 1, DD was walking at 10 mths - don't remember when her running began.

    6.  At what age did you start trying to potty train?  What age was your kid completely potty trained? DS started potty training a little over 2 (like 2 and 3 mths) and was pretty good to go during the day at 2.5, DD started potty training at like 20 mths and stopped having accidents at like 2 and 3mths or so (I think we started her early but daycare suggested it and then once we started I hated to go backwards).

    7.  When did verbal language really take off? Oh gosh this is hard to remember but I know DS and I were having conversations on the way home from daycare and he was just over 2, I think DD was about the same.

    8.  When was your kid able to use a fork/spoon effectively?  I am thinking 1.5???? but they still don't like to use them so I can't really be sure they know how now :o)

  • 1.  Favorite thing about the second year?  Least favorite? favorite- definitely her verbal skills! She started talking pretty early and it was so nice to be able to communicate with her! Least favorite- probably teething. She has a very rough time with teething and those molars were a nightmare!

    2.  When did the tantrums really start? I think they started around 18 months and got worse around 2!

    3.  When did your kid(s) stop napping altogether? She's 2.5 years and still naps about 2 hours a day. Although sometimes at school she doesn't take a nap since some of the other kids in her class have dropped naps It makes for a very long afternoon/evening at home!

    4.  When did you move them out of the crib?  Into what? She was never a fan of her crib so converted her crib to a full size regular bed at 18 months. She moves around a lot at night and is much happier in a big bed.

    5.  At what age did your kiddo walk? and how soon after walking did they learn to run?  She took her first steps a week before her first birthday. She really started walking by 13 months.

    6.  At what age did you start trying to potty train?  What age was your kid completely potty trained? We're potty training now and it's not going so well. I We hope she's at least daytime trained by 3!

    7.  When did verbal language really take off? She said a lot of words early on but really started talking around 18 months or so.

    8.  When was your kid able to use a fork/spoon effectively?  Can't really remember, maybe 15 months or so?

  • 1.  Favorite thing about the second year?  Least favorite? favorite- definitely the verbal skills and his booming imagination!! The least favorite were those first few months (12 month to about 16 months) where he refused food, was teething badly, and didn't have as many words to express his frustrations.

    2.  When did the tantrums really start? About 2 months ago....so 2 yrs and 10 months.

    3.  When did your kid(s) stop napping altogether? around 2.5 yrs. It sucks. He ocassionally takes one now.

    4.  When did you move them out of the crib?  Into what? 2 years and 3-4 months. We moved him into a full sized bed with a bunkie board instead of a box spring....so it is lower to the ground.

     5.  At what age did your kiddo walk? 12 months.

    6.  At what age did you start trying to potty train?  What age was your kid completely potty trained? We started introducing the concept around 2.5 but never pushed it. He sort of decided last week that he was done with daipers. It has been a pretty smooth transition with few accidents. (so just one week shy of 3 yrs old)

     7.  When did verbal language really take off? around 14-16 months. Full sentences came around 18 months.

    8.  When was your kid able to use a fork/spoon effectively?  Probably around 2 yrs old.
